About the Author

David Boucher is Professorial Fellow in European Studies at Cardiff University. He is Director of the Collingwood and British Idealism Centre at Cardiff. He was formerly a professor of Political Theory and Government at the University of Wales, Swansea.

Past works include 'Political Theories of International Relations' (1998), 'Social Justice: From Hume to Walzer' (edited with Paul Kelly, 1998) and 'The Social Contract From Hobbes to Rawls' (edited with Paul Kelly, 1994). Paul Kelly is a Senior Lecturer in Political Theory at LSE. He has previously taught as a Lecturer in Politics at the University of Wales, Swansea.

Past works include 'Multiculturalism Reconsidered' (October, 2002), 'British Political Science' (edited with Patrick Dunleavy and Michael Moran, 2000) and 'Social Justice: From Hume to Walzer' (edited with David Boucher, 1998).

I complain because the cases are very long. I wonder whether they could be edited down a bit. But the great thing about this casebook is the sample problems included. It makes you start thinking about possible exam questions, which is very useful.

A must for anyone who really wants to finally understand Tung's Acupuncture

As an acupuncture physician I've always looked for more concise (simple) ways to treat and I was introduced to Master Tung's Acupuncture. All the seminars, etc are too far so I have read both major books on it but there is too much info. I have watched webinars from two prominent practitioners and afterwords, I'm still confused. I have had the pleasure and honor to communicate with Brad personally and he has been so open to sharing his knowledge and information but still the imaging aspect has been a bit foggy. I recently watched Brad's recent webinar on elotus and then followed it with his book and for the first time, this totally makes sense. Brad has presented Tung's acupuncture in an easy, concise, organized fashion with examples, points, and fantastic diagrams. As he says, it's not about the points themselves but understanding the why they go where they do. I now feel so much better prepared to utilize the techniques. Thank you Brad for your sharing and so much caring for the profession and each one of us.

Some gems, but you have to hunt for them

Brad has an excellent command of images, and he gives some very useful tips from his own experience. That being said, the book suffers from poor editing, and the organization could be improved. The tone is conversational, which is moderately acceptable, until the grammar mistakes get in the way of clarity. At one point in the book he says DO NOT needle bilaterally (in capital letters) and in another part he says it is fine to needle bilaterally. Then, at another point, he says needle shoulder points "I like TW 14 and SI 11 in particular. That is on the shoulder joint, or is it TW 15 and SI 12? I'm sorry, I forgot the TCM points. But I like these those two points..." Confusing, and I find it frustrating at times.
The first half of the book feels like a webinar lecture, and the last half consists of transcribed questions and answers from his experience with elotus webinars. Some of the diagrams are lifted from Deadman's Manual of Acupuncture (which he cites), and some lifted from H. McCann's Practical Atlas (which he doesn't). I would suggest that before you buy this book, you at least have a working knowledge of Tan style acupuncture so that you are able to make sense of the jargon and the approach.

Very helpful in understanding mirroring and imaging in acupuncture

This is a great book. Anyone interested in Tung or Tan acupuncture, I recommend reading this and also watching available webinars with the author, Brad Whisnant. This isn't a reference for Tung points like most of the other books available on the topic - it goes into the theory and explains clearly imaging, mirroring and microsystems and I have found it very clinically helpful. A great pair with "Practical Atlas of Tung Acupuncture" which you can use to reference specific point numbers.

About the Author
Andrew J. Gordon, associate professor at the University of Houston, is an applied cultural anthropologist. His work in Belize includes directing an ethnographic field school that started in 2003, following earlier applied work in the country on the prevention of dengue fever. In addition to a PhD in anthropology from the University of Wisconsin, the author holds a master's degree in public health. Combining his expertise in these two areas, he has spent considerable time both in conducting ethnographic research in West Africa and the Dominican Republic and in consulting about problems related to health and development for the United States Agency for International Development, the Pan American Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control, and The World Bank.

The book was a fun read. The author, Debborah McClatchey, did a nice job developing the characters. I found myself so involved that my heart would beat like crazy during some of the more intense parts of the book. It was amazing how quickly I finished it, but then I couldn't put it down.

It was heart warming the way the little group of girlfriends cared about each other and how they looked for one another while a very cunning killer with a twisted mind was terrorizing their neighborhood. Deborah McClatchey did a great job of describing the girlfriend’s characters. I especially liked Chloe, she had a sweet and delightful character. I was totally absorbed in this gripping story. I kept reading, and turning the pages, I just had to find out what was going to happen next. I was thoroughly entertained by this enjoyable read, which was thrilling with lots of suspense and exciting twist. I highly recommend this book.

THE Best book on how to write a story I've ever read.

All these years, I've gotten trapped in the weeds when trying to write stories. Outlines could not get me out of it. Why? Because I didn't have real stories, I had situations. Jeff Lyon has explained, in very clear terms, what you have to do as a writer to make a story via a premise line creation process whereby you link a protagonist's moral blind spot to a protagonist's ultimate desire and work out how the story develops. What you get at the end of it is a premise line that is like a microcosm of your story: all written out in one or two sentences. My writer's block is done!

This is a great book that's suitable for both the novice and experienced writer and everyone in between. Jeff's method of analyzing the bones of a storyline is fundamentally sound, and it's a completely different take than what you'll find in Story Craft, Save the Cat and The Writer's Journey. It basically takes the classic, The Art of Dramatic Writing, and translates it into concepts that are more assessible, tangibly illustrated and easier to grasp and apply. Jeff breaks down well-known works and provides worksheets and temples to use in testing out and fleshing to a story's arc. Anatomy of a Premise Line has earned a place on every writer's shelf.

If you are thinking about finally writing that book you've been thinking about, Anatomy of a Premise Line will help you zero in on your story's best arc. After reading it, I highly recommend workshopping your story with Jeff. He's mastered the craft and is a generous and creative collaborator.

Anatomy of a Premise Line: The first book every writer should read

You could sum up this book in one sentence: Strip a story down to its essence, then write.
The message is simple; however you do it, your writing will meander without the true story that guides it.

Easy to read because it is so intuitive, practical and direct, J Lyons deconstructs the mystery of why some stories sag in the middle and lack satisfaction in the end. It is not a writing book; it is a how to tell the story book--what needs to be figured out before you get lost in the weeds. Is it everything you will ever need? No. Is it the first thing you need? Yes. I have a score of 'writing' books that miss the simple truths you will find here. Read Anatomy of a Premise line, then go dust off those writing books if you still need them. My guess is you won't, because this is what you have been missing all along.
