Gayle H. Gregory is first and foremost a teacher, having experienced teaching and learning in elementary, middle, and secondary schools, community colleges, and universities. She has had extensive district-wide experience as a curriculum consultant and staff development coordinator. Gayle was principal/course director at York University for the Faculty of Education, teaching in the teacher education program.
Her areas of expertise include brain-compatible learning, differentiated instructional and assessment strategies, block scheduling, emotional intelligence, student motivation, RTI Tier One, collaborative learning, common core, renewal of secondary schools, enhancing teacher quality, coaching and mentoring, managing change, and building professional learning communities. She also a trainer for Visible Learning Plus with Corwin.

She is an author of numerous books related to educational neuroscience and differentiated instruction, assessment, and curriculum, including the following titles:

Lin Kuzmich, of KCS, Inc., is an educational consultant, professor, and author from Loveland, CO. She served the Thompson School District in several roles as the assistant superintendent, executive director of secondary and elementary instruction, director of professional development, and a building principal. Her school was named a 2000 winner of the John R. Irwin Award for Academic Excellence and Improvement. In addition, for the past decade she has been involved in staff development through several universities and the Tointon Institute for Educational Change. Kuzmich is an adjunct professor at both Colorado State University and University of Northern Colorado. She is a senior consultant for the International Center for Leadership in Education, has provided training and consulting to school districts around the country, and has presented at numerous national conferences.

An Introduction to Writing for Electronic Media: Scriptwriting Essentials Across the Genres, I would write a longer review for this book, but unfortunately I have a quiz in the class that I bought it for tomorrow morning. It was a required text that I bought for a class, and I think most of the people shopping for this book will need it regardless of how shiny of a review I give it.

Great book, but irritating use of articles

I've been using this book for two weeks now and the information provided is excellent.

The only thing I do not like is the author's use of "a" and "an". Misusing these articles is one of my major pet peeves so it distracts from my learning the information. If you have no issue with this definitely use this book.

As far as textbooks go, this is one of the most useful, fun, and easy to learn from book that I have ever used in the classroom before. It is not out of date and it still applies today, even though there is not a lot of magazine or newspaper jobs anymore. So, anyways, I really enjoyed this book and my media writing class that used it.

Bannon's Brides is a great adventure from start to finish! Cord Bannon is a true man of honor who will risk his life and heart to escort a passel of potential brides clear across the continent to the mining town of Glory. Sweet but feisty Fiona Quinn is a "reserve" bride who hopes that true love waits for her at the end of the arduous journey. Filled with memorable characters (Ma Smalley and Isaiah are favorites), Bannon's Brides sparkles with countrified wit and harrowing adventures. Though Ms. Rogers writes on the sweeter side of romance, the love scenes were steamy due to the undeniable attraction between Cord and Fiona. You'll find yourself reading at a furious pace to see how Fiona gets out of another tangle, or what secrets the other brides may be hiding. Bannon's Bride

After reading this book, I was amazed that Loretta Rogers was not on bookshelves in bookstores. Not only was the book a true western, but contained just the perfect amount of romance to create the perfect rough and tough cowboy. The book not only grabbed my interest from the beginning, but held me throughout. I found every character to be perfect in their part. I have passed the book on, and recommend it, and her other books to everyone I know. I have read several, and find each one to contain superb authorship. Whoever said a woman couldn't write a good western does not know Loretta C. Rogers!

Spell Bounding!

This was the first download for my new Kindle. I can see now where I made a very wise purchase. This story was superbly written with great characters and gripping suspense. Ms. Rogers obviously did her homework on this story, as the descriptions and situations were so life-like and authentic, it was hard to stay in the current century while reading it. I fell in love with Fiona from the get-go. This ranks up there with my favorite reads. Looking forward to reading more from this author! I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

About the Author
Momoko Kuroda (b. 1938 in Tochigi Prefecture) is one of the most highly-respected haiku poets in Japan today. She has published five collections of haiku, and authored or co-authored another 22 prose works including essays, season- word compendiums, books on haiku for beginners, and a two-volume set of interviews with notable Showa-era poets. Her first haiku collection earned her the Modern Haiku Women award and the Haiku Association New Poet award. In 2011 she was awarded the Dakotsu prize, Japan’s most prestigious haiku award. She is a haiku selector for the Nihon Keizai Shimbun’s weekly Sunday haiku column, and a frequent haiku selector for NHK television. She is on the jury of several national and regional haiku contests, including the annual Mainichi Shimbun haiku award. In 1990, she founded her own haiku organization, AOI, with a nationwide membership of several thousand. All this she accomplished while working full-time at Hakuhodo, a Tokyo-based advertising firm, until her retirement at age 60.

Abigail Friedman, a retired diplomat and accomplished, award-winning haiku poet, began composing haiku in a haiku group that met at the foot of Mt. Fuji, led by Japanese haiku master Momoko Kuroda. Her book, The Haiku Apprentice: Memoirs of Writing Poetry in Japan (Stone Bridge Press, 2006), captures that experience and her insights into haiku. She is founder of HaikuQuebec, the first French/English bilingual haiku group in Quebec City. Her work has appeared in poetry publications in the U.S., Canada, France, and Japan, including: Frogpond; AOI; The Asahi Weekly; Association Francophone de Haiku (AFH); The Moss at Tokeiji (Deep North Press, 2010); ; and Bilboquet. She has presented her haiku at the Montreal Zen Poetry Festival, the Festival international de la poesie de Trois-Rivieres, Haiku Canada, and Haiku North America. In 2012, she was commissioned to compose a haiku to mark the U.S. gift of dogwoods to Japan, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Japan’s gift of cherry trees to the U.S. Awards and Other Honors: First Prize, Mainichi International Haiku Contest (2014); Second Prize, Mainichi International Haiku Contest (2012); Grand Prize, Yamanashi Mt. Fuji haiku contest (2011); Honorable Mention, Mainichi International Haiku Contest (2008); Finalist, Kiriyama Book Prize [for The Haiku Apprentice] (2007); Second Prize, Mainichi International Haiku Contest (2006).

Day Moon

Its polished layout style makes this a pretty little book. And if your
interest is in knowing about the life of Momoko Kuroda this book offers glimpses through the eyes of a friend.

But if your interest is to understand the way Kuroda writes haiku you will need to explore other translations of her verses. At least some of the verses in this book are not true to the poet's actual meaning. They have been rearranged, the kireji (cutting word) misplaced or changed, and suffused with substituted words when succinct words are available.

Fortunately, Friedman reveals a more literal translation of one of the selected verses in her commentary on the flycatcher verse [pg. 110], but the verse falls close to the end of the book, leaving the reader wondering about all that came before.

The final section shows modern-day haiku as it morphs into personal introspection with its increased frequency of the self as subject matter. With this shift the natural world seems to lose its power as the broad allegory for the cycles of human existence -- a faintly visible waning day moon.

We think we know haiku. It's the short-short form of poetry based on seventeen syllables in a 5/7/5 line length, usually an observation of nature. It's poetry of the moment, dashed off quickly, not serious writing.

Wrong. Haiku is so much more—which is only one of the surprises in this beautiful small volume of haiku from one of Japan's most renowned poets, Momoko Kuroda, translated with insightful commentary by Abigail Friedman, a career U.S. diplomat who studied with Kuroda when Friedman lived in Japan.

Like the haiku it centers on, I Wait for the Moon cannot be summed up in simple terms. The hundred poems Friedman chooses take readers on a journey through life, writing, Japan, and the evolution of one woman's resonant writing voice.

Haiku, it turns out, are limited to 17 units, not syllables: the units are 17 sounds of Japanese Kanji, the pictorial letterforms. The line lengths are not a prescribed 5/7/5; rather they are signaled by grammatical breaks or kireji, the word that signals a "cut" or turn, a surprise in the haiku.

The point of delving into haiku form is not to mess with reader's heads, but to show the intricacy in those seventeen beats, details that make this form of poetry far more challenging and meaningful than most people realize.

Take this early Kuroda haiku:

"underground passage/ there's a wind rushing by—/ the calendar seller"

Simply a powerful observation of a moment, it seems, until Friedman comments:

"As is so often the case with haiku, it is the unstated which completes the poem. We must divine the sound of calendar pages fluttering and flapping in the wind, drawing Momoko's attention to the calendar stall. Here, everything is in motion—the poet walking through the passageway, the wind, the pages of the calendars, and time itself (the calendar being a symbol of tempus fugit)."

Friedman shows Kuroda's decades-long evolution from a classical poet of haiku, based on reporting or observation, to a poet whose haiku are deeply reflective. The changes in the poet's writing voice were sharpened by the events of March 11, 2011, when the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan struck the country's northern coast, followed by a devastating tsunami and the man-made devastation at the Fukushima nuclear power plant went into meltdown.

Friedman writes:

Momoko believes the triple disaster changed not only the lives of the victims, but everyone's lives. She felt that she needed to achieve a 'self-revolution.' She set about contributing to the revival and rebuilding effort through her role as a haiku selector [she was asked to encourage locals to write haiku about the events]. ... Momoko urged contributors to write about their painful experiences. (Specifying such a request was particularly necessary as the cultural norm in Japan would be for victims to try not to burden others with their pain.) She embraced the idea that haiku did not have to be about the blessings of nature. She confessed regret and shame at having failed to heed early critics of nuclear power, and she took a public stand along with other artists against nuclear power. Looking back, Momoko believes that the events of March 11, 2011, forced a transformation within her, altering her perspective on life and nature, as well as haiku.

I Wait for the Moon is haiku at its richest, an exploration of life and our lives through the voice of a justifiably revered poet and her insightful student. As usual, an excellent presentation of haiku and the translations thereof. Ms. Friedman has spent many years in Japan and has been an assiduous student of the literary form. She is also fluent in Japanese both reading and writing the language.

A surprising gem ... useful for a non-technical person to understand the very basics

Coming at infrastructure from the perspective of a corporate financial analyst needing to understand a little bit more about the operations of an IT infrastructure, I liked this book a lot.

The book is almost entirely declarative in nature and has three very nice features:

1) A basic framework up front that shows the key structural elements of "infrastructure" (networking, compute, physical space, etc.),

2) a logical progression of topics (following said framework), and

3) Descriptions that are entirely accessible to a non-technical reader.

I'm sure you wouldn't be able to run AWS (or even something 100x smaller) with this book. But for the non-technical reader or for the complete beginner in infrastructure management, it's a useful first book.

My only gripe is that the Kindle edition doesn't have a working Table of Contents, which is more of a pain than usual given the several nature of the various chapters. But the content is solid.

Decent introduction to components of IT infrastructure

The author has done a good job of introducing a framework for IT Infrastructure that captures many salient dimensions of the numerous components that constitute the technological infrastructure of modern enterprises. He further touches on some of the critical non-functional attributes that professionals should be aware of that are central to infrastructure. While the book is a bit historical and at times can be a little dry I have not found any other book that does a better job at introducing these concepts. Hats off to the author to fill a void in the current literature.

Great for learning basics!

This was our course book in ICT infrastructure course. My prior knowledge about infrastructure was quite weak and I think this book gave me a nice overall picture about the subject.

Solid advice, excellent format, applicable to today's games, explanations occasionally lacking clarity/detail

I play up to these stakes live and am a winner over several years of part time play.

This book is good because it accurately captures the situations and player tendencies present in most live games. Though the hands are played primarily at $10/20, the strategy is probably applicable down through tougher $2/5 tables. (With the caveat that the lower in stakes you go, your assumptions/sizings/strategy may change as less of your opponents are competent) I wouldn't recommend this book for competent known winners at $5/10+. Players seeking help at $2-5 and up will find benefit here. Possibly $1/2 players, but the optimal bet sizing, hand ranges, and opponent tendencies will be different at this stake due to huge rake and very bad players.

The format of the book is very good. The book is a collection of hand histories from several long sessions. The author pauses at each decision point of his hand and asks you what you would do in that spot. After the hand, he revisits each decision and discusses the merits of all the options. There are even a few spots where he admits a mistake in his own play and shows what the better options would be.

The huge benefit to this format is that it has a lot more training value than most poker books. As long as you actually stop to think about your preferred decision before moving on, you're exercising your poker decision making instead of passively reading. Despite being a bit more practice than entertainment, the book is also pretty interesting / engaging. The format also allows you to read very small sections in a single sitting if you don't have large blocks of time set aside for reading. (normally, that wouldn't be an effective way to read a poker book)

I do have one small complaint about the book: Though the author's decision making is quite good, I think his explanations can sometimes leave a little bit to be desired. He's trying to straddle a line between being brief so he can talk about every decision, while still effectively explaining the hands. Admittedly, this is a HARD task.

I'll give an example - in one hand, we open from KJo UTG (normally would be a fold, but author claims that his image is VERY tight, so it might be OK). One passive player flats in middle position and the button (a young competent/agressive looking player) 3bets our UTG open. This is a great spot to 4bet.

Author agrees, but I think his explanation is lacking: He says our opponent appears competent, so he will sometimes play back at us. So go ahead and put in a small raise since we have blockers to some premium hands such as JJ, KK, AK.

This is all correct, BUT, the key here that makes this spot good for a 4bet bluff and other spots bad is the composition of each player's range in this spot. When you open from UTG, your range should be very tight and nutty. The range of hands that wants to 3bet your UTG range for value is extremely narrow. Young aggressive players will 3bet widely on the button in order to apply pressure and try to get folds either preflop or postflop. It's hard for him to get dealt a hand good enough to 3bet you, but easy to 3bet bluff. So his range is actually full of bluffs and semibluffs, while your range has plenty of nutty hands. Also, the player in between you has a capped range after only flatting your open (no premiums in his range). You just so happen to actually hold an extremely rare weak hand at the rock bottom of your range.

In summary, this is an excellent time to 4bet bluff because your overall range is strong and nutty while your opponents' ranges are either capped or bluff heavy. They can't play back, because you will have AA/KK often in proportion to the times that you will bluff. The blockers in your hand are icing on the cake.

I just think that a very good conceptual explanation is needed when we advise players to start 4bet bluffing, as you can get into a lot of trouble.

Despite my rambling complaint above, I still think that this book and format will do a lot more to improve your live cash game than many other current alternatives.

I went to the mental game part 3 first and it is something I am still working on and I will continue to work on more often some of the tips from dr. gardner were awesome I have most of jonathans books and he never lets me down. my only complaint I have is they offer free Elliot roe video that I cant find to download and a tournament cheatg sheet that I cant find but these both could be because of me. jonathans FLOAT THE TURN WEBSITE IS A GREAT VALUE ALSO TRY IT!

Another Excellent Book from Jonathan Little

In this book, Jonathan Little takes you through 100+ hands he played over four days, discussing the plays he made and why he made them. It's "the why he made them" that makes this book a tremendous source for improving your poker game.

I liked that he discusses valid different lines that could be taken and even criticizes his own play on a few hands. This book will teach you how a top-level pro thinks about poker in the heat of battle. If you want to take your poker game to a new level, I HIGHLY recommend your read Jonathan Little's books and Ed Miller's "Playing the Player" and "How To Read Hands at No-Limit Hold 'Em".

A New Twist

This has to be one of the best Daggers & Steele to date! This one’s really more about Detective Daggers than anyone else (which really isn’t a spoiler—I mean come on, just look at the cover and read the teaser), but despite the fact that Daggers is on his own a lot in this one, it’s as riveting as ever. I got a bit more of a thriller vibe from this one than the others, and though it starts a touch slow, it grabs you at the initial twist and doesn’t let go. There’s a fair number of loose threads, but they all get tied up neatly at the end.

And can we talk about Daggers and Steele on a personal level for a sec? I don’t want to give anything away, but I mean—finally! Thank you! Something happens! (And no, it doesn’t get racy. So sad. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for the next book.)

Excellent, in the continuing tradition of this series.

"sexual content" only if you count kissing. Oh, did I give away the fact that Steele & Daggers are growing closer (much closer)? As with the other books in this series, I thoroughly enjoyed the story. Even the "mushy stuff". But it's a good detective story first of all. I eagerly await the next.

Daggers best outing yet

I've enjoyed this series so far. It's lightweight urban fantasy with a good dose of humour. The plots aren't wonderfully deep but the main characters are fun. This is the best of the series yet, I thoroughly enjoyed it's slightly darker storyline and humour.
