very helpful

I ordered this book for an upcoming med term class I'll be taking. It has given me a head start on the subjuct. It's easy to follow and very interesting. I am now looking forward to my class rather than being intimidated by it. Plus the book was delivered in four days. That was a nice suprise.

After renting this book at the library I had to have it. This book is very imformative it gives great tips on remembering the words, prouncation(spelled wrong). This book is just overall good. You want be disappointed. A must for any HIT student.

My emotions are still all over the place and I know I just can't write a review good enough to do justice to this story

What is the cost of the true behind a lie?
What is the cost of the secret that's hiding the true?
If you ask me what was it I expected when going into this story, I probably wouldn't know what to tell you. But I can tell you one thing: I know I got more then I expected.
This story, written in the first person and taking place in 1960th, follows a young woman named Amy. She finds herself in a small Somerset village, taking care of a little girl named Viviane who recently lost her father. It is not an unfamiliar fact that Viviane likes to have imaginary friends. After their arrival, Viviane can't stop talking about her new friend, Caroline, who has the same name as Viviane's mother's sister who died 30 years ago. Not only that she has the same name, but she also knows things from Caroline's life that no one else but Viviane's mother would know, and she never talks about Caroline. Suddenly, strange things start to happen in the house and Amy can't help but wonder if Caroline is real.
This book took me by surprise. After finishing it, I needed some time to think about it, to sleep and clear my mind. My emotions are still all over the place and I know I just can't write a review good enough to do justice to this story.
The writing style is amazing and it is full of visuals. I couldn't help but imagine shadows of gray covering pictures in my head, playing a movie that gave me chills and kept me on the edge because I didn't know what will come from the story.
It was like watching The Ring, only different. The atmosphere was similar, but the plot, characters and message were different.
The message. It is the most precious thing about this novel. If I tell you what it is, I would spoil your potential reading experiance, so i won't.
But I will tell you this: If you have a chance, give this book a chance.
If you do that, I guarantee you that it will keep you awake, it will make you think about monsters, but not the paranormal ones. The real monsters that live among us and can destroy many lives. It is our responsibility to stop them.

A wonderful, unsettling novel

This was such an intriguing read. You could really feel the intensity of the house, it gave me the heebie jeebies as I was reading (I had to take breaks, even though I desperately wanted to know what was going to happen!) I can handle being creeped out when I expect it, but I wasn’t with this one, and it was so unsettling.

The circumstances that Julia and Viviane find themselves in are quite sad. Imagine having your world turned upside down in an instant and having to leave everything you knew behind? Viviane held the plot together, with her imaginary friend named Caroline – which also happens to be the same name as Julia’s sister who passed away many years before. Coincidence? Amy would like to think so, but all the same she tries to find out as much about the real Caroline as she can. Which proves a little difficult, as no one wants to talk about what happened back then.

Amy was such a great main character. She desperately wants what’s best for her friends and will do anything she can to help them, no matter how little she has to give. You get the feeling that if she hadn’t been there, they would have completely fallen apart.

This is a novel about relationships, friendships and lies. Everything felt urgent and the pacing was great. As the house seemed to revolt against them, the need for answers grew. It was such a story that was unravelled, parts of it were disturbing and there’s some things that make for uncomfortable reading; but it’s well worth it.

The only thing that I didn’t really like about The Secret by the Lake was the romance. It felt a bit immediate and I didn’t really get it at first, but it ended up being quite sweet (and furthered the plot!)

This story was just so atmospheric. I can’t even explain what it was like to read it and be sucked into this world. Louise Douglas has done a brilliant job with it, and I’m looking forward to reading more of her books!

A wonderful, unsettling novel. Family secrets are laid bare, and it’s not for the faint hearted. I really, really recommend this if you like to be kept on the edge of your seat with anticipation!

Haunting - and wonderful

I’ll admit that I’m not usually keen on ghost stories - it’s the curse of an over-active imagination I think, the fact that they disturb me so much and keep me awake at night. Although it’s partly fair to call this a ghost story, I think I’d prefer to call it simply haunting - as things began to go bump in the night I simply couldn’t stop reading because it was such a wonderful story, a slowly unfolding mystery that I found absolutely mesmerising.

The setting and the vivid descriptions were quite superb - the neglected cottage where Julia and her daughter Viviane were forced to live after the death of Julia’s husband Alain, joined by Amy their former nursemaid, companion and friend; the brooding presence of the lake with its changing faces and hidden depths and dangers.

The story is told by Amy in a strong, clear voice - and she’s immensely likeable, a rational presence seeking to find an explanation for the strangeness that surrounds them. It’s a story full of tension, suffused with immense sadness and injustice, set in a community that likes to keep its secrets. And as the truth emerges around the life and death of Julia’s sister Caroline, it’s a quite enthralling story - a story of evil and depravity, full of surprises and unexpected discoveries, with a level of tension that cranks up until you can barely stand it, and a totally heart-stopping finale.

Louise Douglas is a quite magnificent story teller - the whole story is quite perfectly paced, maintaining a perfect balance between the unexplained and inexplicable and the emerging uncomfortable truth. It’s also heartbreakingly sad - Julia’s total desolation at her husband’s death is something you feel at your core, and Amy’s desperate attempts to help her and her daughter move on makes you ache inside at the injustice of it all. The atmosphere the author creates is quite exceptional - it’s absolutely impossible to tear yourself away. This was a quite wonderful read - I absolutely loved it.

Many people know Michael Jordan as a legend, but did you know that even this legend has failed. As a sophomore in high school, Michael was cut from the varsity basketball team. Though he may have had thoughts of giving up, it inspired him to work even harder. Michael Jordan Speaks by Janet Lowey tells the story of Michael's life, and what obstacles he has overcome. Throughout the book, Michael faces many struggles, not just physically but emotionally. This sports superstar had to deal with the murder of his father, his business (Jordan), and entertaining the fans of the Chicago Bulls. No matter how bad the problem looked, he never gave up.
Follow Michael Jordan through the ups and downs of being the worlds most known person. See what it's like from growing up in a small town in North Carolina to packing NBA stadiums in almost every city he goes to. Michael has a storybook of a life, from what the general public knows. Find out what conflicts Michael came upon on his journey to the top.
Michael faces many challenges throughout his life. The most difficult challenge brought upon the superstar was the murder of his father. Though Michael did retire from the NBA after his fathers' murder, he didn't just give up. He needed a break from the spotlight while he got his emotions in sorts. Later he did return to the NBA, but in my mind that isn't even close to giving up, because he returned to the Bulls to win three Championships in a row. Michael also faced some trouble with his gambling problems. Michael denies that he has ever had a gambling problem, though many NBA officials beg to differ. Reporters have tried to get him in trouble with the contract he signed with the NBA in reference to gambling. In the end the NBA couldn't try Michael for anything because he would make bets on legal things, such as a private golf game, or a card game. Throughout the whole conflict, Michael never lost his cool to any reporter, though many reports goal in life was to try to get Michael to explode at them just to get a good story. Michael hasn't once lost his cool in the public eye, because he believes that he is someone who kids look up to. He wants to give out a positive image, so that kids will follow his lead of being a polite and respected person.
Janet Lowe took a different type of approach to writing this book. She based the book on quotes that Michael has said, and then went off on a tangent to tell his life story. It is a different type of read, but it is interesting to see what Michael is feeling in his quotes, compared to what is happening in his life. It took me a couple pages to get used to the style, but it is an interesting way to look at his life.
Through all the ups and downs in his life, Michael never once gave up or lost his cool. He kept his eyes on his goal, and remembered his role in society as a role model. Kids look up to him, and he realized it, so he wanted to set a good example for the kids to follow. Nothing was handed to Michael on a silver platter, he had to work hard and never give up to achieve the level he was at.

Michael Jordan Speaks is a very good book because Michael lets you know what he went through as he looks back at it all. As I read it I kept on thinking to myself whoa!. Mike had that God- given talent that comes naturally and he was determined to become a better player. He started to put a lot of work in and had that ability to make it. Micheal said "It's not how you start, it's how you finish." "It's not what's on you, it's what's in you." The stuff that he went through I didn't think that he would be able to conquer it. Mikes words made me think positive and how things in life will work out. His sophomore year he faced a bad thing that he felt like not playing anymore. He got cut from the basketball team. Micheal's coach felt like he wasn't ready, so he worked at it. As time went by money started to come and people were amazed on how this boy turned out to blossom.
