Interest in Mary Magdalene, the quasi-legendary woman of the Gospels who stood in an ambiguous relationship to Jesus, is booming just now. According to noncanonical sources, she was Jesus' wife, and probably not the prostitute with whom she is often conflated or confused. Among those unorthodox sources is one of the fragmentary early texts rejected by the church fathers and now called the gnostic gospels. Found in 1945 at Nag Hammadi in the Egyptian desert, it is a short but complex Coptic text that appears to render the voice of Mary Magdalene. This volume contains English translations of Leloup's French version of the original and Leloup's extensive commentary, which discloses the theology that inspired the lost gospel. Best Commentary for Mary's Gospel!

I LOVE this book. Our Christian Science Bible Study Group is studying it together. It starts out with Mary asking Jesus, "What is matter?" LeLoup's commentary is great. He says something to the effect that before one can comment on the human condition, one must ask how real it is, how permanent. This is a must have commentary to Mary's Gospel!

Virtual fixtures which improve the teleoperation and human-robot cooperation in complex environments are covered next and the last chapter presents nanomanipulation as one specific example of teleoperation.

Lots of things to think about

We have purchased several of these calendars the past few years. This is another very well done calendar with a lot of interesting art. It is art that is about the world around us and says so much. I ave to put a plug in for the blue spiders. They are just gorgeous.

This endlessly beautiful and creative calendar delights. The natural scenery is enhanced by clever artistry. Everyone who sees the environmental art asks about the images and takes a closer look. Whenever I think I've found 'the best' photo I'm wrong. Each image enchants anew and makes me want to go outside and create. Give it to yourself and that hard-to-buy-for someone. You'll start a new tradition. Be sure to look for it in late summer; this calendar sometimes sells out and you don't want to miss it.

David J. Pratt is a Professor of Civil Engineering Technology at SAIT Polytechnic and a lecturer in construction costing at the University of Calgary. Professor Pratt is a professional quantity surveyor and cost consultant. While I think Ha-Joon Chang could have devoted at least a little bit more time to an economic topic this weighty, he manages to offer an incredibly comprehensive and ultimately compelling argument for why developing countries should use protectionist trade policies to enhance economic growth.
There were two particular elements of Chang's research that I really appreciated. The first was the level of rigor that he applied in trying to isolate trade policies as a causal factor in economic growth. Instead of simply looking at a country's tariff levels and then their GDP growth, he also explores different countries level of "institutional development" in areas such as democratic representation, child labor laws, limited liability laws, central banking autonomy, bankruptcy policy, etc. In pursuing this kind of methodology, he is able to more effectively argue that the issue behind developing countries' lackluster economic growth is not a lack of maturity in these democratic institutions (in fact, many of them are more maturely developed than that of most NDC (now-developed countries) were at their highest points of industrialization) but rather a lack of protectionism.
Another thing that I appreciated was his willingness to point out that the UK and the US experienced their highest rates of industrialization when they had some of the highest tariff rates in history. Similarly, India and China have the highest rates of industrialization among developing countries while pursuing the most aggressively protectionist trade policy.
While his research/methodology could be criticized for being incomplete, I still think that his book offers an unique, maybe even essential perspective in an area where it seems as though the dominating consensus is free-trade and unfettered globalization. A must-read for all the neo-classicals/neo-liberals.

An iconoclastic and sophiscated work

According to Michael Lind's book review in Prospect (Jan 2002), this book is "the most important book about the world economy to be published in years." And the author received the 2003 Myrdal Award for this book, which is awarded annually to a great academic achievement in the field of development/institutional economics following the late Swedish economist's name Gunar Myrdal who was a Nobel Prize laureate.
Prof. Ha-Joon Chang of Cambridge argues in this book that developed countries used some measures for promoting their economy in their earlier days of development, which they are now blaming for making the economies of developing country worse and the world economic order unfree.
The author reverses this logic. According to his arguments, policy-suggestions from such arguments of developed countries are in fact making the economy in developing countries lag behind and its development impossible, and such a rule of game in the world economy now can be rather unfair to them because developing countries even are often punished due to their using of the very same methods which developed ones used in the past.
As a critique of neo-liberal market fundamentalism, this book is very iconoclastic because it gives readers a sophisticated understanding of the real history of industrial development as well as pleasure of reading an academically original and creative work. This book is above all analytical in terms of using the method of historical comparisons. Some comparisons may be too bold. But its creativity and integrity in organizing the research overcome the limits of bold comparison.

A telling attack on free trade

Written more for an academic/professional/specialist audience than the general reader, Chang's short book is still accessible and full of information that is vital to our understanding of how the ideology of free trade has been created in order to reward developed nations at the expense of those trying to develop. The United States, Great Britain, Germany--essentially every country that has successfully industrialized--used tariffs, protections of infant industries, control of capital markets and other policies that poor countries are told they must not try or abandon if they are implementing them. The hammer has been the threat of losing funding from IMF or World Bank although the conditionalities of Structural Adjustment may be as harmful as the economic imbalances they are meant to address.

The ladder image is simple and brilliant. It was coined by Frederich List, a nineteenth century Germany economist, to describe how the already successful United Kingdom tried to impose free trade policies on nations that hadn't yet become industrial powers and is no less true today than it was in 1834.

Chang's historical approach is devastating to free trade apologists and propagandists who serve the dominant development ideology which keeps poor countries poor. His more popular book "Bad Samaritans" is based some of the research evident here.

The "Hard Copy" Version of This Book is Excellent

I purchased the softbound version of this book, and found it to be excellent. It is organized by type of whitework, with each section including a brief essay about the work, a list of the stitches required, and the usual excellent illustrations we have come to expect from Country Bumpkin.

To the reviewer with the disappointing Kindle experience, perhaps you can pull the book up on your home computer with better results. Personally, I avoid buying any book that is dependent on illustrations in the Kindle version because it usually disappoints - good for novels; not so much for crafts.

Amazon really needs to start separating book reviews by Kindle and "hard copy" versions. They're totally different experiences, and I've seen too many good books with mediocre ratings because the Kindle version was inadequate.

Great book but Do NOT get the Kindle version.

The Kindle version is frustrating to use and will NOT work in Windows 8 or higher versions. This is a shame since what I could read without too much zooming, scrolling and centering looked great. Photos were excellent once they fully came into focus.WAIT for the hard copy.

A Handbook of the English Language

Although published around 1850, and extremely technical, the language used and principles expressed by this author are very easily comprehended by the reader -- except when he spins out phrases, sentences and even paragraphs in Latin, Greek or a Germanic language without benefit of translation. Apparently in those days you were expected to master those languages before your English. If reading this book on the Web, be fore-armed with a (Windows-based) translation program such as Dicter to navigate these 450+ pages of profuse and meticulously organized declensions, inflections, conjugations, derivations, quotations, and so forth. The author makes his analysis of the English language a pursuit, using a method not unlike that of Sherlock Holmes, of the truth, examining and weighing all the clues, and arriving at his conclusions, rather than starting with them. An altogether fascinating study for the etymologically inclined.
