What a Resource!

This book has so much in it that can help a practitioner to relieve the aches and pains of his clients, and even sometimes keep them out of surgery. Any given page has so much information in it. You have clients that need to relax and you have those clients who need to get out of pain. Be a practitioner who can do both!
Massage and Manual Therapy for Orthopedic Conditions is the best reference I have ever seen which has "recipes" for gentle and effective work for clients with conditions such as frozen shoulder, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, etc. It's best if you can take a course from Mr. Hendrickson, but I have friends who have used just the book, and noticed their work become better and better.
I struggled in my early practitioner years, looking for this information. Now that I have it, my work has become so much more effective (and FUN!). It's comfortable and relaxing for the client and ergonomically safe for the therapist. Different from other modalities, but can be integrated into any kind of session to make it more effective.
This book is a must for any serious bodywork practitioner.

Mandatory for ALL clinically oriented manual therapist!

As an educator and former instructor of an advanced clinical (medical/orthopedic) massage program, I'm constantly asked by massage therapists for an all-in-one reference to help them comprehend my approach/philosophy to outcome-based bodywork. Although I've pulled and integrated information from several resources; from Travell to Rolf, and types of bodywork; from Reiki to Rossiter, I've found one resource to be indispensable as a solid foundation on which to build: Massage for Orthopedic Conditions by Thomas Hendrickson.

For manual therapists who seek to achieve effective goal-oriented sessions for their client/patients, it's comprehensive in its scope of essential functional anatomy, implications for treatment, joint-specific history gathering (including sample questions), kinesiology, sources of dysfunction and injury, and much more. Hendrickson's text also covers a range of information from the general theory of vibrational medicine to targeted muscle energy and friction techniques.

I tell manual therapists, if they are serious about clinical massage and achieving powerful, effective, consistent results, this text is a must-have. This resource keeps on giving; as the reader will uncover layers of details and depth at every reading. My two copies of the first edition have been reduced to tatters from overuse syndrome!

This new edition comes with various improvements that his legion of enthusiasts will appreciate. I, for one, am a great fan of the new color illustrations. Also, I enjoyed the updated rationales for treatment, as well as the flow between assessment and application of techniques...a topic often missed in other resources.

Hurray, for Thomas Hendrickson's new edition! May it inspire, guide and educate future clinical therapists to facilitate and attain healing in their patients for many years to come!

Great Adjucnt to Physical Therapy

Dr Thomas Hendrickson, DC, has published a revised, expanded edition of his excellent first book, Massage for Orthopedic Conditions. I must admit, that as a practicing physical therapist for thirty years, I was skeptical about his addition of "Manual Therapy" to the title. However, after perusing the book, I have to put petty turf-wars aside. Manual therapy is not the exclusive domain of the Physical Therapist, Osteopath etc. I do feel that an extensive course in anatomy (e.g., a year long course with cadaver lab) provides a far better base of knowledge than the brief education of the typical massage course. That being said, the material in the book is sound and logical, and provides the willing and astute student with an excellent adjunct to the 400 hours of training that the Hendrickson Institute offers. Dr Hendricksons mentor, Lauren Berry, RPT was a fellow Redding resident, and I have experimented with his unwinding techniques with very good results. This is a very well written text book, with the most up to date literature and sound reasoning. It is for these reasons that I highly recommend this book for the practicing medical professional or the well trained massage therapist. Kudos to Dr Hendrickson. Stewart Johnson, PT

We went to a counselor who recommended reading pages 27 thru 64

We have been married 39 years and we were arguing more than getting along. And, of course, sex was out of the question.
We went to a counselor who recommended reading pages 27 thru 64. Within a few weeks after reading, discussing, and acting on these pages our marriage was better than ever. And, no, we did not fill in many of the questionnaires.

I, the husband, discovered that, while my wife's positive expression makes the larger positive difference to our marriage, but it is my mindfulness to her that enables her to make these expressions. I firmly believe that I was not aware of the many times when she wanted my attention, but I was simply unaware.

It is now 4 months after reading the book. The flame has been glowing brightly and we intend to give each other the attention that we deserve.

Did this book save our marriage? Perhaps. It certainly did make us happy again!!!

One of the few scientifically supported relationship books out there

Wish it came in a Kindle version. The best book to read if you're struggling with relationships.

This book is a reader friendly overview of Gottman's scientific research on romantic interpersonal relationships. In the past I had read a ton of other relationship books, but none of these were substantiated by published, peer reviewed, scientific research. Since I'm working on my own PhD, at some point the lighbulb went off, and I did some research in the university library on what to read...and found out that Gottman is one of the few well respected academic experts on interpersonal romantic relationships (and other things.) If you look into some of the Interpersonal Communication psychology textbooks, some of them even compare Gottman's research to the gender stereotyped stuff that's out there...well, let's just say I had wasted a lot of money on things like Mars/Venus.

Overall, I was very happy to read this book. It does not deal with gender stereotypes or cookie cutter instructions on how to act like a desirable man or a woman. It also does not make you feel bad for not "understanding the system" or the "other gender" or whatever. Rather, it but substantiates the grown up point of view that we are all individual humans and that you actually have to do some homework - that you have to learn, and be attentive to, the specific ways that your special person communicates his/her needs and emotions, given their specific background and experiences, in your specific relationship.

Not easy to do, and it means work on your part, but it takes away all those "I am not good at this so tell me what to do" feelings that the other amateur hack books out there pray on.

excellent, very insightful!

Read this book and share it with your partner if you can. It is so spot-on about communication, I really wish everyone would read it! The basic premise is explaining how we relate to each other and what happens when we don't respond in a way that potentiates that relationship. It's easy to understand, a great read. I especially recommend it if you are in a relationship that is not going well and BOTH of you are looking for help in fixing it. Read it together. It will help you understand each other. (I only wish it wasn't called The Relationship Cure because it's really about Communication!)

Obviously the last reviewer has no sense of personal style and needs simplistic step-by-step books to tell her how to decorate.

About the Author

Kim Flachmann teaches at the California State University, Bakersfield, where she also administers the Composition Program—from remedial English through the Graduate Teaching Assistants. She was chosen Outstanding Professor at CSUB in 1998-99. She also was Rhetorician of the Year for the Young Rhetoricians’ Conference in 2007 and was the recipient of the California Association of Teachers of English Excellence in Teaching Award in 2009. She has published numerous articles on rhetoric and American literature and has written seven textbooks—among them a college reader ( The Prose Reader (Pearson) in its eleventh edition), a series of three books for developmental English called Mosaics: Reading and Writing Sentences , Mosaics: Reading and Writing Paragraphs , and Mosaics: Reading and Writing Essays ,

(Pearson), and Nexus: A Rhetorical Reader for Writers (Pearson), which combines traditional rhetorical modes with students’ interest in

When She Was Alive

What would her best book be, one wonders . . . perhaps MRS. DALLOWAY or A ROOM OF ONE'S OWN or BETWEEN THE ACTS or maybe, in a funny mood, THE WAVES. THE MOMENT must be pretty low down on anybody;s, wouldn;t you think? She didn't even mean for it to be a book, instead after she died Leonard Woolf just kept finding things and editing them up so that the Hogarth Press could keep churning out new volume after new volume of Virginia Woolf's. Well, i can understand that. And it's not necessarily the case that the very furst posthumous collection of essays, THE DEATH OF THE MOTH, had a higher percentage of hits than THE MOMENT, it's only that nearly everything in THE MOMENT feels a little soapy and watery, as though the suds had gone out of the dishwasher a long time ago. I was never crazy about Virginia Woolf's fascination with her own family. Maybe that appeals to some old school Bloomsbury fans, but a piece like "The Enchanted Organ: Anne Thackeray," is hard to read now with a straight face, and not only because of the double entendre, which I'm sure slyboots Virginia Woolf intended, of "The Enchanted Organ," but really because she's trying so hard to make us think that Anne Thackeray was indeed an important writer.

How about two different essays called, "Royalty." It isn;'t very helpful that the only way Leonard chose to distinguish them it to have a footnote appended to each, not when both footnotes say the exact same thing, "Written in 1939." Huh? Maybe I'll write an essay called, "Royalty," and add a footnote that says, "Written in 1939." That would serve me right, royalty too. It isn't that she, Woolf, was worshipful of royalty, although one recalls the godlike presence of the limo at the beginning of MRS. DALLOWAY, traversing the square slowly very much like the progress of a god's chariot, everyone standing around wondering and whispering who coukld be inside, which member of the royal family.

"On Being Ill" has attained classic status, and well deserved too, for it contains one of her most interesting discoveries, that illness has not its own literature and it should because it takes up so much space in our lives, particularly in the upper middle class. And yet the essay sort of peters out, as though she'd had rhis apercu and yet couldn't deide how to develop it. You get the feeling she wants to describe and than analyze her own symptoms, but then she wants to universalize them as a metaphor for being alive, enlarge the context of Russell Square, and yet the essay itself winds up eulogizing the bygone members of the British aristocracy, who lived such big lives. It has zero to do with being ill and heaps to do with having status. She's great, but let us turn to another book by her, one she wanted to have printed.

A jolly good read!

Such a wonderful book, it is so much more than just a book about pirate radio. It is an adventure story, full of intrigue and over coming adversity. Most importantly it is a book about family, the bond between a father and a son. If Prince Roy Bates have lived to read it, I am sure it would have made him more proud of his son than anything achieved on Sealand. A jolly good read!

Quels sont les secrets, prudemment gard�s, des personnes avec lesquelles nous partagions une vie? Quels sont les limites, et meme les profondeurs, de notre ignorance et naivet� si bien nourries? Quand le dernier cr�puscule tombe et d�daigne de s'attarder, qu'est-ce qu'il nous restera pour nous mener a bon fin? Sur quoi pourrons nous prodiguer les derniers de nos jours? Voila quelques unes des questions caverneuses qui s'ouvrent b�antes avant ceux qui lisent ce roman. L'h�roine est agr�able a l'exces, mais alors meme qu'on l'aime--et en fait on l'aime jusqu'a la fin--on commence a se demander si elle vraiment a toute sa tete. Est-elle en effet incapable d'�viter quelques unes des horreurs qui l'assaillent? Est-elle l'innocente victime de ceux qui d�cident son sort at qui l'ont cr�� comme elle est? Chose �trange, mais c'est possible que le personnage le plus attachant de ce roman c'est la demeure ancestrale, ou la plupart de l'action a lieu. Plant�e sur une falaise aupres d'Yport, au Pays de Caux en Haute Normandie, elle regarde la mer qu'il pleuve ou qu'il vente, aim�e par ses habitants, mais beaucoup desservie en fin de compte. Pourtant elle conna�t la t�nacit� et la mesure et sa place. Si seulement ceux qui s'abritent derriere ses murs pourraient apprendres de ses lignes, de son bon sens silencieux, de son ordre, de son repos.

Well written as one would expect from such a classical author.
A true to life story and a compelling easy read.
Even though sheltered from needs in terms of parents' love and money, one bad decision can change all of that overnight and shatter one's future.
The story highlights what some women have to endure whilst looking for happiness, including the abuse of a mother's unconditional love for her child.
Happy ending.

Practical, To-the-point Requirements User Guide for Managers

Ivy F. Hooks and Kristin A. Farry give their audience a clear methodology about how to eliminate rework and unnecessary features rooted in poor requirement definition for making product development or procurement faster and cheaper without sacrificing the better. Good requirement definition is more important than ever to especially fast-paced high-tech companies for which researching, developing, and commercializing products on schedule and within budget is key to be, become, and remain competitive. Interestingly, Hooks and Farry explain to their readers the profound impact that culture, education, and management have on requirement definition. Their critical examination of the "seven cultural forces that define Americans" in chapter 2 helps their (foreign) audience better understand why some (American) marketers have no time to do it right the first time, but endless time and a company bankroll to do it wrong over and over again to quote Kevin J. Clancy and Peter C. Krieg in their excellent Counter-intuitive Marketing. Hooks and Farry remind their audience that nothing can change for the faster, cheaper, and better without a management commitment. Management must make very clear through their entire organization that quality products begin long before design and manufacture. These products find their genesis in quality requirements. One of the best product books on the market!

Hooks and Farry show you how to get it right the FIRST time, providing practical, easy to follow directions to achieve what every company wants - faster, better, cheaper products that are SUCCESSFUL. This book explains product management from an engineering perspective that is as practical as it is useful (unlike other books that put too much 'marketing spin' on product management, making it seem more like some mystical process). 3/4 of the way through this book I called the authors, and they are now coaching our entire company on this philosophy. And it's working!

I am working on a key project and needed methodology to improve
how we specified the product we wanted. I found the book to be very useful and we are applying its methodology to our current project with great success. Only improvement might be additional info on what software is available to do requirements planning for smaller, non-software, related projects.
