A gripping, harrowing, and well thought out story with great characters and a mystery to boot!

I was asked by the author to read and review this book. This does not bias my review.

Streamline by Jennifer Lane is not my typical YA read. I don't usually pick up contemporaries, but am totally not adverse to them especially when they are done well. Streamline focuses on Leon Scott, a high school guy who seems to have it all: he has the perfect girlfriend, he's a top swimmer and captain of his team, he is in great physical shape and effortlessly does well at school. However, his life has a dark side--his father is a military man and because of some life events and bad choices, has turned to abusing his family emotionally and physically. For the first half, we live through Leon's eyes, becoming a swimmer and going to his meets, but also following him home, and watching the horrible abuse at his home. The next half shows Leon overcoming some difficulties at home and going to military school. All throughout this story winds a mystery-- his girlfriend's father is imprisoned for a murder-- but did he really murder anyone?

This book is a long one, and you have to be dedicated for the ride to come. But it's worth it. The first half may have seemed a little too long in the build up, but I did enjoy learning about being on a swimming team, what the practices are like, and so forth. I can see how people immersed in this world would really delight in this part. I wasn't sure how the story of Leon and his dad's conflicted relationship would go-- at some times, I wondered if it would end up being too trite. But the second half really made this book worth going the distance (no pun intended). Lane is a psychologist and it shows-- the moments between Leon and his psychologist were amazing. I felt like I was in the room getting therapy with Leon, seeing into his inner mind and watching him discover aspects to his own personality that he never understood. At the same time, I enjoyed watching the mystery finally unfolding and coming to a pounding climax. While I thought the characters were well thought out and three dimensional, even Leon's father, I sometimes thought there were too many of them. Also, the ending seemed almost too easy, where everything fit exactly in the right place and they lived happily ever after. Life is messy, and doesn't always work out the way we want it-- and that's okay, we learn and grow. I felt that this book wanted to say that, but in the end, may have taken the easy way out.

That said, I enjoyed the journey with these characters, loved learning about swimming, and particularly loved the scenes between Leon and the psychologist. I know this is Lane's first YA book, but she has great promise in this genre.

sweet story with a bit of mystery

I'm not even sure where to begin with this one. Streamline is such a heart tugging, sweet story with a bit of mystery.

Leo is a great kid but he carries the weight of the world on his shoulders. He's constantly worried about his family and his girlfriend. There's this great need in him to fix things for everyone. It's hard to see him go through some of the stuff he does. Especially with his father.

Audrey is a sweet and supportive girlfriend. She definitely has way more stress in her life than a teenager should. Between worrying about Leo and her own family, plus her swimming career, phew it's a lot.

Even though the story is about Leo and Audrey both, I feel like he is really the 'star' and that's ok with me. I don't normally connect with a teenage boy when I'm reading but I did with Leo.

Streamline is not an easy read. When I say that the reason is because there is physical, mental, and drug abuse, teen pregnancy, suicide. It's a lot to take in and I had to read it in starts and stops until I made it to the middle of the book. At that point things started moving so fast I didn't want to stop. I had to know what would happen next.

If I had to say there was one thing I didn't like about Streamline it would that at the end of the book I'd have liked a look at everyone in the future. But really, that is such a small thing in the grand scheme of things. Streamline hit all of my 'feels' and I loved every word of it.

My Summary:
Leo Scott and Audrey Rose have been dating for two years. They met in school and are both accomplished swimmers on the swim team. They are both trying for college scholarships. The problem is that their family lives seem to keep getting in the way and creating massive stress. Both Leo and Audrey come from military families. Leo's father is physically abusive and Leo has always managed to keep that a secret. Then there's Audrey, who's father is in prison for a murder he doesn't remember. Leo and Audrey learn to rely on each other and their relationship becomes much stronger in the process. So many things happen to pose challenges for these two, but can they make it through to the finish in one piece?

My Take:
When I saw the cover of the book and the title, I'm not sure I even read the description before signing on. As a former swimmer and current swim coach, I knew I would have a connection to this book in some way. Boy was I right! I'm so glad that I signed on for this tour. Not only did I find a fantastic story, but it's always fun for me to chat with other people who have a passion for swimming. Grab your box of tissues though. This is an intense story.

There are so many things that I liked about this story, but I'm going to start with the swimming. I LOVED all of the swimming parts of the story. I felt the rush that they felt while racing, could picture exactly what they were doing, and of course am familiar with all the terminology. Even if you aren't a swimmer, you will still appreciate and follow along with that aspect of the story. Swimmers are very disciplined in their sport. Training can be intense, and YES, we do shave our whole bodies for big races. I loved the little details and that made me feel a part of their lives.

Now, moving on to the characters. I'm going to start with Audrey. I like her. She's a sweet girl with an air of naivety about her that I find endearing. She's very focused on school and swimming. I found a connection with her there. I love that she never gave up hope for her father and trusted her instincts. Audrey could have easily walked away from Leo on many different occasions, but she didn't. I admire the fact that a girl that young could find the tenacity to stand by him despite what was happening in her own life. That truly proved to me that she loved him deeply.

Leo...Leo...Leo. I really fell for Leo. To me, Streamline is Leo's story more than anything else. He is such a sweet guy and has a tremendous amount of determination to succeed. The problem was, he did it for his father instead of for himself. Until he finally started to break through that mold, he was stuck. URGH... his father, CS, is terrible. His nick names were well deserved. Yes, Leo was a good student; yes, he was a fantastic swimmer; yes, he had a great girlfriend. I'm just not sure he could really enjoy those things in his life though, while he was under his dad's thumb. I really don't want to reveal anything from the story, but man oh man this kid has been through a ton in his life. The amount of pressure his father put on his shoulders, was literally unbearable for Leo. He turned to outside resources to cope and to manage his literal pain. What I admire though, is that in every difficult situation, he found a way out; whether it was through his own resources or through the help of others. Lastly, I adore they way he loves Audrey. Their relationship was so sweet.

Clearly you can see that I developed quite a connection to this story and these characters. Here's what I will tell you though. This book was extremely difficult for me to read. I had to put it down and walk away from it on more than one occasion. The reason being, there are very serious issues and situations that are discussed. From addiction to abuse, the whole track has been run. It's a long story too, so breaks were needed to get through it and keep myself from turning into a slobbery mess. Am I glad I read it? Absolutely. Would I recommend this book to others? Absolutely. Would I re-read it? I don't think my heart could handle it. I did enjoy the writing style and the flow was smooth. There were a few parts to the story that I wasn't sure needed to be in place, but that's just my opinion.

My overall/final thoughts are that this is a truly touching story. It's more than I expected it to be. Even though there is a romantic relationship in the story, I didn't feel that that was what the story was about. So, I would say pick this book if you are looking for an amazing story of self discovery, personal triumph, justice, a little mystery, and a touch of romance. Really...truly...a remarkable read.

God's Awesome Grace

If you ever want to understand God's grace, read this book! This was the first book that I ever read as part of a home group and it was totally awesome! It really touched me and set me free. I'd never really fully understood what God's grace is and how to discipline myself to live in it until I did this study. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to break free of legalism and truly live in God's awesome grace.

Peter J. Russell received his B.Sc. in Biology from University of Sussex in 1968 and his Ph.D. in Genetics from Cornell University in 1972. He then joined the Biology faculty of Reed College in 1972 where he is currently Professor of Biology. Russell teaches an upper-division genetics and molecular biology lecture/laboratory course, the genetics section of the introductory biology course, an advanced seminar course in yeast virology, and advises senior thesis research students. He is also the author of a number of successful genetics textbooks.He is currently studying the molecular genetics of the replication of double-stranded (ds)RNA viruses found in budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The research goals are to define in vivo the cis-acting sequences that are required for viral RNA packaging into capsids and for genome replication, and to identify and characterize any yeast gene products required for virus propagation. His earlier research involved Neurospora rRNA synthesis and the organization of and regulation of the number of ribosomal RNA genes, and nitrogen metabolism in the pathogenic dimorphic yeast Candida albicans.

And it doesn't happen in familiar situations, like a tennis match. Strategic intuition works in new situations. That's when you need it most.

Everyone knows you need creative thinking, or entrepreneurial thinking, or innovative thinking, or strategic thinking to succeed in the modern world. All these kinds of thinking happen through flashes of insight—strategic intuition. And now that we know how it works, you can learn to do it better. That's what this book is about.

A well known psychology concept and its importance innovation. Putting into practice not covered in the book.

The author just explain what Introverted Intuition cognitive function does, a function discovered by Carl Jung. This mental process is used to predict the future and make insights, more accurately described by Dario Nardi , Briggs Myers and others in Psychology and Neuroscience fields. Difficult to put into practice is you are not a dominant user of this intuition or at least auxiliary, like INTJ, INFJ or ENTJ and ENFJ; personality types found in innovative people and known genius. If you want to know this concept from a business and science perspective, and see examples of how it was applied before, read this book. Other books about how to develop this cognitive function could help you in apply this concept.

Makes sense

A pretty quick read and to the point. The ideas resonated with me. Real innovation comes not from planning harder and wanting it more than the next person. It comes from having a deep understanding of the subject both from an historical and contemporary perspective. Then one has to be open and willing to let the mind find connections amongst a variety of existing ideas/tools to create a new path (dharma) or innovation. Where the book was particularly relevant, in my opinion, was the recognition that true innovation only occurs in the proper environment or situation (karma). Dharma and karma fit like hand in glove. Hence the infrequency of real and substantial innovation.

It answers a very particular question

I've been looking for a book that answers the question "How do I go from my SWOT analysis (a chart that puts on one page strengths, weaknesses, external opportunities and threats) to a plan that really works?" Most of the books I've read recommend that a manager work up their analysis and then use it to write their plan. But I've noticed that going from analysis to an awesome game-winning plan is extremely hard to do, and is something I and my managers do with less success than I would like.

This book addresses my very specific but important question by describing what the right person needs to do to set the right conditions to have the right flash of insight, and how our usual planning techniques actually go against this natural process. Duggan makes a clear and non-technical argument and, for what it's worth, seems to match my experience.

The few shortcomings of the book, in my mind, are that it is difficult to clearly apply this approach to an organizational setting. His one example using the GE "What Works" matrix is a bit thin and without clear results, making me wonder why he could not find a better example with real results, and why GE ultimately discontinued the method. Secondly, this book does not help someone become more able to have flashes of insight. Setting the right conditions is great, but it is no guarantee of brilliance. Perhaps this would be a question for his next book.

Overall, I loved this book because it gave a solid framework for an important and longstanding question I've had, but I only gave 4 stars because of the shortcomings mentioned above.

The graphics are plain but good. Interesting facts. My biggest complaint is that the postcards are hard to remove from the book without tearing. I've tried to remove three and three have ripped. Very frustrating.

Useful Addition to the Marshal's Library

This volume fills much the same niche as Mansions of Madness (Call of Cthulhu Horror Roleplaying, 1920s Era) did in its day; places for the party to end up during "breathing space" in an ongoing campaign which turn out to be none too healthy.

These places can also be used as places to hold one-off games, or to host mini campaigns with a little work (I got an unbelievably long and lively 14 sessions from Coffin Rock (Deadlands Reloaded Adventure, S2P10201), which others deride as "too short", with only a modicum of effort).

There are seven ghost towns described, along with the threats posed by being there. The name isn't totally honest, as these towns are inhabited, but those inhabitants are the last hangers-on in towns barely alive and there may be hidden meaning in the term "ghost town". There are a couple of Savage Tales set in various of these Ghost Towns an dthere is a nifty Locale Generator with which to dice-up a spur of the moment place in which to adventure.

The production is the usual Deadlands:Reloaded affair, with graphic design to match the other PEG publications in the series, full color and gloss paper throughout.

As with all Explorer Editions it is a perfectly bound paperback. I always replace the binding with a spiral binding at my Local Office Supply Store, which obviates the eventual failure of the binding and autumn-in-bookland and enables the book to lie flat on a table during play, and I ask for an oversize binding to ease the turning of pages.

If money is tight in your pockets, this would be a fine publication to add to your wish list. If you need inspiration and cannot stretch to The Flood (Deadlands Reloaded, S2P10202) (a very deadly campaign from the get-go) or The Last Sons (Savage Worlds, Deadlands Reloaded, S2P10209) (marginally less deadly at first) then this might very well be a book you'd be advised to purchase. If you are a seasoned Deadlands:Reloaded marshal then there is no question that this book should be on your shelves.

Is your posse tired of the same generic western town no matter where they go? Well then this is the book for you, Marshal! Excellently written with several sample towns and adventures just waiting for players to explore. I'd recommend this to any and every Marshall. It even includes a random town generator, in case you feel like building your own, but need some help getting started. My posse has never been happier and the games are more fun than ever.

By far the best introductory handbook for IE linguistics

THEORETICAL BASES OF INDO-EUROPEAN is a handbook to the field by Winfred P. Lehmann, one of the greatest scholars in comparative linguistics in the 20th century. It is perhaps the only up-to-date handbook available, and is worth obtaining for any hoping to understand the means by which languages from Irish to Hindi can be traced to a common ancestor.

Lehmann's personal approach to introducing comparative Indo-European linguistics is not merely to talk about what is currently believed, but to trace each theoretical breakthrough over the past two centuries. As a result, students will be quickly become acquainted with the big names in the field and the laws they formulated. The standard handbooks of yesteryear, such as those of Szeremenyi and Brugmann, are summarised, and the basic methods for comparative reconstruction are laid out. Only then does Lehmann move on to displaying the view of the proto-language that we have reached to the present moment.

There are two chapters on phonology. The first is that of the proto-language just prior to its breaking up into dialects, i.e. Proto-Indo-European. The infrequency of the voiced unaspirated labial (b) and the "glottalic theory" proposed by Gamkrelidze and Ivanov are discussed in depth, and with a critical view. The second chapter on phonology concerns that of Pre-Indo-European, when internal reconstruction can show what the language looked like before the disappearance of the laryngeals and the fragmentation of its ablaut system. Morphology is split over two chapters, the first of which discusses nominal elements and the second verbal elements. As is Lehmann's style, the syntax of the proto-language and of Pre-Indo-European are covered at incredible length. Finally, there is a brief section on the search for the Indo-European homeland.

Though published in 1993, THEORETICAL BASES is the most useful introductory handbook available. It is recent enough to devote full attention to the findings of Soviet typologists which suggest Pre-Indo-European was an active language. Lehmann is refreshingly neutral, displaying all sides of recent disputes, and always letting the student know that his assertions have opposing views. The only real competition is Szemerenyi's INTRODUCTION TO INDO-EUROPEAN LINGUISTICS and Fortson's INDO-EUROPEAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE. The first, even in its third edition of 1990, is decades out of date and gives an idiosyncratic view of phonology (Szemerenyi was the last holdout against laryngeal theory). The second is overly simplistic and often makes certain things seem settled and done with when they are still very much in dispute.

Lehmann's THEORETICAL BASES is hands-down the best introduction to this fascinating field now available. While there's other handbooks worth taking a gander at, this one is definitely worth purchasing and keeping in one's personal library.

The Way Theory Should Be

This book is unique in that it presents a huge mass of scholarly material and is extremely readable at the same time. The way this is accomplished is that the development of theories are addressed through the history of their development. It's amazing to see a topic like this comprehensively treated in an almost narrative manner. Aside from the enjoyability of the read, you get the benefit of learning two things at once: (1) The Theoretical Bases of Indo-European Linguistics, and (2) the history of the scholars and their work (or how (1) got that way). Essential for anyone interested in IE Linguistics or the history of scholarship (bonus if you're interested in both).

A systematic approach for the Indo-European linguistics

The author of this book, Prof. Winfred Lehmann describes very systematically on the theoretical bases of Indo-European linguistics, referring the existing standard handbooks with valuable criticism. He introduces the modern methodology and principles on the phonology, morphology and syntax for the Pre-Indo-European and Proto-Indo-European. This book is highly recommendable for the beginners and experts on the Indo-European linguistics.
