I believe this book is both interesting and very good. Since it helps teach the individual the various aspects and techniques used to draw the human figure. Such as the different points-of-view an artist needs to consider when drawing the human figure and "short-cuts" used by other artists. It also describes the origin of figure drawing and a brief background to its development. In short, I feel that this book helps both the beginner and the intermediate artist develop his/her techniques and styles of drawing.

Extremely intelligent and unusual, finding out what works

This is an extremely intelligent and unusual book as the professional reviews state. Dr. Patashnik has carved out a very interesting area in political analysis for himself and if this book is any example, he does quite well. I worked in health care economics and it was common for people to ignore the issue of what happened after changes were made even when the changes were important and had been controversial. This is the point of this book, we need to be more concerned with what actually happens when we reform something rather than simply satisfy ourselves that we have enacted a reform. It is like evidence based medicine, the importance of knowing whether something works or not. This is a unique and important book, bravo. Highly recommended. It may seem a bit too academic for some readers but be brave, it won't hurt you.

About the Author
Kouhei Horikoshi was born in Aichi, Japan, in 1986. He received a Tezuka Award Honorable Mention in 2006, and after publishing several short stories in Akamaru Jump, he made his debut in Weekly Shonen Jumpin 2010 with Oumagadoki Doubutsuen. Barrage is his second series in Weekly Shonen Jump.

Decent Adventure Manga in Need of More Originality

It is a bit surprising to me that "Barrage" (original title "Sensei no Baruji" meaning "Baruji of the Warring Planets") is now available in English, because Kouhei Horikoshi's adventure comic series lasted only 16 episodes (published in two volumes). In some Japanese comic magazines, a newly launched comic series is sometimes cancelled unceremoniously for various reasons just like TV shows in America, and "Barrage" is one of such titles.

This does not mean "Barrage" is a bad manga. The story begins promisingly with a teenage slum boy Astro living in a capital city "on a certain planet in a certain galaxy." One day Astro, being mistaken for the prince who has run away from the palace, is brought to the king of the war-torn planet. Astro's adventures begin when he decides to be the "prince" so that he can protect his "family" (orphans he has been taking care of) and the country from the enemies.

The manga is certainly an entertaining read. Though the combat scenes lack the stylish flair of more famous artists like Tite Kubo, Horikoshi's artwork is above average, rather orthodox in drawing characters and background. What the comic does not have is originality - by originality I mean interesting supporting characters, unique gadgets or funny jokes. Each episode is told skillfully, but I think the comic needs something that gives the entire story a momentum and sense of continuity. The orphans (for whom the hero fights at first) disappear too soon. The idea of "warring planets" is almost forgotten in the later episodes.

Kouhei Horikoshi's short-lived comic series "Barrage" is the artist's second work published as tankoubon book form, following his more commercially successful "Omagadoki Doubutsuen." The comic was originally serialized in 2012 in "Weekly Shonen Jump," most popular comic magazine in Japan (known for "Bleach," "Naruto," "One Piece" and many other famous titles).

As I said above, "Barrage" is not a bad comic. It is a decent manga work with respectable artwork, but needs some originality to distinguish itself from others.

Wonderful! Loved this. So fun going into a manga knowing that it is only 2-volumes long for a change. I love Twain's Prince and the Pauper and that is what drew me to this story but it only has the very basic similarity in that the streetkid becomes the Prince. I won't say anything more about the plot since it's just two books! Astro, the main character is a lot of fun with lots of moral fibre teaching the other Royals something they've forgotten for some time. His bickering partner is also fun a little mysterious. The battles are great and the "boss" at the end of this volume is very cool. The T rating for 13+ states violence but there is nothing graphic at all and I would have recommended for younger readers (8+) if not for the cursing, though there isn't much.

A Victim of Shounen Jumps cutthroat standards

I was highly disappointed when I found out Barrage was going to be cancelled a mere few months into it's publishing. I found it to be a manga filling what many other shounen lacked: specifically tasteful characters. While the story was certainly nothing to write home about, a standard protagonist thrown into a world where he is expected to be a hero, I found all the characters highly compelling and felt if this story had landed in another magazine, it would've certainly made the cut and lasted much longer. Even at a short 2 volumes, I still recommend Barrage for it's fantastic art and likeable characters.

It's true, Men Love Abuse

I read this book in a little over a day and I must say that it's the truth. The book is entertaining, informative and funny. It's a must read for all women. It basically breaks down how to act accordingly, to get what you want and how your actions are perceived. Think about it no more and just buy the book.

Tionna, you are the best advise giver in the history of mankind. I have all 3 of your books and they are all written in a language that can be understood and is informative. Some of the others who wrote reviews said that your books are geared toward younger readers. You books are useful to any woman. I am a 55 year old white woman who thinks that you are a true advise guru. Keep up the good work.

bye bye nice girl--time to take your power back women!

ALREADY WORKING!
I read Tionna's Books because I heard her on the radio show "Street Talk" doing this show called Good Girls vs Gold Diggers and it was so obvious that she was a woman I NEEDED to learn from. I fell in love with her first book and literally gave it to 4 people to read because it was a best slap in the face about taking your POWER BACK. Finished Men Love Abuse and within the next few days I was realizing how hard it is for me to get rid of that nice girl (WHICH HAS GOT ME NO WHERE!...so I read the book AGAIN. I gotta shake this off because it has created way more sadness than happiness. And already I am so much happier talking to men/dating and with my ability to remain the powerful one in the situation.

My favorite thing about Tionna Smalls is that she knows how to connect with her reader. She is real, honest, and completely herself....and more than anything it's actually fun to read. a self-help book that feels like its a conversation you would be having with a close and wise girlfriend. Love her. love the books...and I want more. this information never gets old because the information is not always easy to put into your everyday life. She reminds me that ME and ONLY ME are first in life. taking our power back!

About the Author
William B. Gudykunst is a professor speech communication at California State University, Fullerton. He received his B.S. and M.A. degrees in sociology from Arizona State University. After completing his M.A., Bill spent three years in the U.S. Navy stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. He became interested in intercultural communication while working as an Intercultural Relations Specialist in the Navy. After being released from active duty, Bill went to the University of Minnesota, where he completed his Ph.D. in 1977. Bill’s work focuses on developing a theory of interpersonal and intergroup effectiveness that can be applied to improving the quality of communication. Bill is the author of Bridging Differences (Sage, 1994) and coauthor of Cultural and Interpersonal Communication (with S. Ting-Tommey, Sage, 1988), Bridging Japanese/North American Differences (with T. Nishida, Sage, 1994), and Building Bridges (Houghton Mifflin, 1995). He has also edited six other books with various publishers.

Young Yun Kim is a professor of communication at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, and formerly taught at Governors State University in Illinois. Young was born wand raised in Seoul, Koreas, where she received her B.A. degree from Seoul National University. In 1970, she moved to the United States and completed her M.A.. degree at the University of Hawaii in conjunction with the East-West Center. She received a Ph.D. degree in 1976 from Northwestern University. Young teaches courses and directs doctoral theses in the area of international, intercultural, and interethnic/interracial communication. She has published her work in journals such as Communication Yearbook, Human Communication Research, and International Journal of Intercultural Relations. She is the author or editor of a number of books including Interethnic Communication (Sage, 1986), Theories in Intercultural Communication (Sage, 1998) Communication and Cross-Cultural Adaptation (Multilingual Matters, 1998). She is a member of the editorial boards of Communication Research, Human Communication Research, and International Journal of Intercultural Relations.
