About the Author
Jean E. Howard is William E. Ransford Professor of English at Columbia University and a past president of the Shakespeare Association of America. She is an editor of The Norton Shakespeare, and author of, among other works The Stage and Social Struggle in Early Modern England (1994) and, with Phyllis Rackin, of Engendering a Nation: A Feminist Account of Shakespeare's English Histories (1997).

Richard Dutton is currently Professor of English at Ohio State University. He is author of Mastering the Revels: the Regulation and Censorship of Renaissance Drama(1991) and Licensing, Censorship and Authorship in Early Modern England:Buggeswords(2000), and editor of the Palgrave Literary Lives series.

For anyone interested in the 'Catholic Faith in the New Millennium,' Newman's Grammar of Assent is a rewarding 'read.' Yet, Newman's Grammar can also be very challenging and confusing even for philosophers and theologians. Connolly's book, which displays enviable familiarity with Newman's writings and his many commentators, both past and recent, is a very helpful and useful guide not only for understanding Newman's thought on faith and reason, but for living the Christian faith in today's world. Great Book on the Finite Element Method for EM

I use commercial simulation tools and have had an introductory computational EM course, but I am not a numerical EM expert. This is a well-written book with a logical and precise presentation. There are two other books on this topic that I have studied. In comparison to the book by Volakis et al, the initial development here is more formal and clear. Sadiku's book covers many more methods than the finite element method and is difficult to compare because of that reason.

The most comprehensive and up-to-date FEM book in EM

The book covers all the basic theory of FEM in electromagnetics, which is perfect for those beginners in FEM. The book also has lots of materials on the most recent developments such as hybrid techniques, method of moments and its fast solver, etc. So it is very good choice for researchers in the area of computational electromagnetics. Nicely written and easy to read. If you want to know anythhing about FEM in EM, this is the book. Go for it.

About the Author
Lester A. Hoel is the L.A. Lacy Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Engineering and the Director of the Center for Transportation Studies at the University of Virginia. He held the Hamilton Professorship in Civil Engineering from 1974-99. From 1974-89 he was Chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering. Previously he was Professor of Civil Engineering and Associate Director, Transportation Research Institute at Carnegie Mellon University and on the faculty at San Diego State University. He also was principal engineer with Wilbur Smith and Associates and visiting professor at the Norwegian Technical University and the University of California at Irvine and a visiting scholar at the University of California at Berkeley.

Nicholas J. Garber is a Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Virginia where he has been a member of the faculty since September of 1980. Before joining the University of Virginia, Dr. Garber was a Professor of Civil Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Sierra Leone, where he was also the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. At the State University of New York at Buffalo, he played an important role in the development of the graduate program in Transportation Engineering. For several years, he was a design engineer for consulting engineering firms in London, and also worked as an Area Engineer and Assistant Resident Engineer in Sierra Leone.

Dr. Adel Sadek is an Associate Professor in the School of Engineering at the Universty of Vermont, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Computer Science. His teaching and research interests are in the areas of Transportation Systems Modeling and Simulation, Intelligent Transportation Systems, Computational Intelligence Applications, and Transportation Planning and Infrastructure Management. He has extensive research experience in the application of computer simulation to transportation systems modeling and analysis. Dr. Sadek is the recepient of the 1998 Milton Pilarsky Award for the best dissertation in the field of Transportation Science and Technology and is also a member of the Advanced Technologies Committee of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

About the Author
Mike has working in broadcast Standardisation for the past eight years before which he had 27 years experience in engineering and in operational management with the British Broadcasting Corporation, latterly at their network center in Bristol. BBC Bristol is home of TV feature programs such as "The Antiques Road Show” and of the BBC's world famous Natural History Unit. Mike managed the television resource base, including Post Production, Graphic Design and Television Operations, at this major production center. Mike has been responsible for the introduction of digital television systems into the program making workflow from the earliest days of digital working. He is a UK Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Society of Motion Pictures and Television Engineers and Chairman of the SMPTE's Wrappers and Metadata Committee.
Ellen Mulder worked for Dutch public broadcaster NOS for 21 years and moved to its resource company NOB for another 19 years. After 30 years in different functions in Television Production, management and R&D, Ellen became Strategy Consultant for the NOB board of Directors, and has actively participated in various standards organisations for the last 10 years. Ellen was very involved with the transition from black and white to colour television in the Netherlands and, later on, with the enterprise-wide introduction of digital production facilities. Ellen is a Fellow of the Society of Motion Pictures and Television Engineers and served as SMPTE Governor for the Europe, Middle East and Africa for four years.
Linda Tadic has 20 years experience managing and cataloguing film, digital, and broadcasting collections. She is currently Director of Operations for ARTstor, a digital image library. Previous positions include Manager of the Digital Library at Home Box Office (HBO); Digital Projects Coordinator at the Getty Research Institute; and Director of the Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection at the University of Georgia. She was president of the Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA) from 1998-1999, was chair of its Cataloging Committee from 1994-1997 and is currently chair of its Digital Initiatives Committee. Linda is an adjunct professor at the Moving Image Archiving and Preservation Program at New York University.

Good information on an obscure issue

If you are trying to justify a digital asset management system to your boss, you will need all the help you can get. If you are trying to rationalize the new system to your coworkers, you will need this book (and much more). If you don't know anything about metadata in the creative arts, this book is a decent place to start. It is practical education and the information is generally accessible. the topic gets esoteric quickly, though; DAM is a narrow field of database development and using DAM for television systems adds another level of specialization.

The authors present valuable lessons in the fundamentals of DAM usage, benefits from real world applications of DAM, metadata creation and entry, and descriptions of existing controlled vocabulary systems and taxonomy structures. However, this is only one piece of the metadata and digital asset management puzzle. You will need much more information and research to design, purchase and build a system that works in your facility or company.

What's missing? In-dpeth product evaluations and suggestions on how to select a decent solution. However, this really is not a not a fault of the work; the marketplace for DAM is not standing still so it's impossible to include timely information.

About the Author

I have enjoyed the Silver Series and the Werewolf Academy Series immensely. All of the books are beautifully crafted, with so much raw emotion and so many amazing characters. They have helped me escape and immerse myself in a world of love, pain, and redemption so real that I felt myself running along with the characters, laughing with their joy, and crying with their sorrow. Never have I encountered a series that has moved me so much. This series is the perfect balance of action, love, despair, and elation. I would recommend it to any reader who loves a beautiful story. Thank you, Cheree Alsop, for writing such a powerful tale and touching my heart with such elegant writing. You capture emotion in a way that I can't even describe. The characters are real, their suffering is real, but most of all, the love and bond they share is real. This conclusion, I won't lie, tore me down. I ache with the loss of the friends I have had so many adventures with, and I am so grateful to have had them. I know that this story will never leave me. I have learned so much from Alex and Jet and Jaze about selflessness, love, and sacrifice. Their deeds, though a work of fiction, have left a lasting impact on myself and all those who have experienced their journey. Though I am sad the story is over, I know the characters will live on in their world and my heart, and I have never been more glad to have picked up a book.

I have loved both the Silver and Werewolf Academy series

I have loved both the Silver and Werewolf Academy series. These books have made me cry at times and this one did too. Couple of surprises I did not expect and was heartbroken when I read them but we knew this was going to be the end of the series and like the others once I picked it up, I could not put it down!... Cheree does great work!

The Future You Wanted Is Near...

Brett King's "Augmented" is the most engrossing book on "the future" I have read is a very long time, and as illuminating as "Guns, Germs, and Steel". He deftly breaks down many of the overall themes and technologies that will affect our future (AI, Automation, Robots, Human Augmentation, etc...) and details what is happening now, and how we will most likely expand and integrate these into our everyday life. It isn't a book about theoreticals and a wide-eyed "Jetsons" futurescape, but how the technologies we are using and developing today will extrapolate into massive disruptions that you need to be prepared for. As one line in the book states, "You'll be paid in the future based upon how well you work with robots." Substitute "robots" with "computers" 25 years ago, and you'd be just as correct.
I recently met Brett and heard him speak at a technology conference. He knows what he is talking about and I have encouraged everyone I know, and especially those with children, to read this book. This is THEIR future, and I wish I was 25 years younger to participate and grow with it even more...

An enlightening view of the world to come, and now!

This book by Brett King I have found to be an enciteful read, and an eye opening view of the world we live in, and to come. A perfect balance thoughout the book of thought-provoking, visionary, balance and scary! For an age that is already upon us this is a book that states the nature of our time. To borrow a line from someone who quoted in the foreword, "makes me glad I'm in technology".

REVIEW OF AUGMENTED: LIFE IN THE SMART LANE BY BRETT KING

By @SimonCocking. We recently interviewed Brett King about his thoughts on FinTech, the future of banking and his views on a range of topics (see interview parts I and II). Meanwhile Brett has been keeping himself busy writing, and launching, on May 6th his fifth book “Augmented: Life in the Smart Lane“, which we now review below.

Firstly the book is a good read and easily readable. It manages to straddle that tricky challenge of being informative for the tech audience at the same time as being interesting and appealing to a wider general audience too. In the time we had it to review it, the book was picked up and read by a range of other interested people. From 13 year old tech geeks, to managers of major cultural institutions, looking to future proof their own organisations. Which indicates this is a topic that interests a wide range of people.

The book begins by taking you through a quick review of the last 250 years of technological innovation, with increasingly shorter cycles of relevance and then obsolescence for different inventions. Moore’s Law, Ray Kuzweil’s predictions of a coming Singularity, and other key trends are all referenced. If you are not familiar with these points of reference they are all explained in a way that again treads carefully between keeping the general reader on board and yet also informing the more tech savvy among the audience.

His analysis of the imminent arrival of ubiquitous renewable energies is refreshing and positive. Coming at it from the perspective that cost will drive it’s mass adoption rather than needing to appeal to ecological considerations. King approaches the growth of AI (artificial intelligence) technologies from a similar perspective, namely that adoption will be driven by the fact that machine to machine transactions will simply be more effective and less error prone than human based interactions. Naturally this will have significant implications in terms of what sectors still need to employ humans and which won’t. These parts of the book are well worth reading to future proof your own potential career decisions!

Drawing on current trends and their likely implications for the future King also analyses the impacts on transportation. Driverless cars are already with us, but in the future it could also free up large amounts of our time, in our ‘third place’, after home and work. Similarly with AI related quality of life improvements there are some very positive future scenarios for humanity in terms of increased time to pursue what interests us and what we care about, rather than merely living to work. Naturally Skynet and other robot distopias are always a possibility and Brett doesn’t shy away from looking at these possibilities too.

Without wanting to give too much away this is a good book as it presents an interesting and thought provoking look at our near and further off future. Much of is it plausible, and as he says, he’s not looking to get it all 100% right, but rather to make us aware of the general direction in which our global societies are heading. Well worth a read, and one that you may find other family members reading too.

Max Weber, Getting to Know Him

This classic is more referred to than read by economists in Anglo-Saxon countries where Weber is considered mainly a sociologist. When I went to Graduate School (Wisconsin) it was not even mentioned. A pity, because it is a milestone in the search for explanations of historical events, in this case the extraordinary spread of capitalism in Protestant countries. One

may not buy Weber's thesis in part or in toto, but it is so carefully argued that dissent has to be very nuanced and scholarly to be persuasive. (An example of such creative dissent is Tawney's "Religion and the Rise of Capitalism").

This Edition contains a fairly good translation; its main weakness is the arrangement of notes (Editor's and Weber's) at the end of each chapter. Hard to find because tops of pages don't contain chapter titles. And the notes are an important part of the whole.

The book also contains several of Weber's rebuttals to some citicisms that he received. Since these critiques are not reprinted here, the rebuttals are not fully self-explanatory. Moreover, this section is not inspiring for another reason: the tone of academic petulance diminishes the image of a great scholar.

Weber's "Protestant Ethic" has here been published along with the author's responses to various reviews; and this is a good idea as it may be helpful in dispelling the misconceptions that arose from the "Weber thesis" and are still rampant. Weber primarily had to deal with interpretations of his work that took him to say that modern capitalism had its cause in the attitudes and working habits of certain minority groups, to wit the "Protestants" or "Puritans" of the early modern era. So it was Weber's primary aim in his "counter-reviews" to point out that he had made no such claim at all; in fact, he assumed that modern capitalism had its origin in various social, political und scientific developments of the West completely independent of Protestantism. In particular, he tried to refute two common prejudices: that modern capitalism arose from greed and avarice, or alternatively, from industriousness. The Chinese, as far as we can tell, throughout history had been as industrious and hard-working as any people in the West, but failed to develop modern capitalism.

What Weber's thesis was all about was a change of outlook of certain groups of people at the beginning of the modern era. He noted, that-largely as a result of religious beliefs and attitudes-some people rejected the age-old and still prevalent ideal of the "universal man" of sound erudition and refined taste, the "gentleman" ideal of the Renaissance, in favor of a completely different life goal, that of the "professional man". This reduction of all human interests to success in one's vocation, has-far from being the "cause" of modern capitalism-simply proved to be the optimal adaptation to the ecological niche created by it.

While the upside of this development, in Weber's reckoning of things, was the emergence of the modern "rationalistic" outlook in all areas of life and thought, the downside was a thorough "disenchantment" of the world. Despite it enormous success in transforming the world and making it truly "humane", the human side of the ledger was not so upbeat. The more successful modern capitalism was, the more it produced a breed of individuals different from anything the world has seen before: "experts without wisdom, hedonists without a heart", as Weber contemptuously remarked, was the final outcome of the "Protestant ethic". (It is now upon us to prove him wrong on that charge.)

Kindle edition severely lacking

Those considering buying the Kindle edition, just be aware most Greek phrases are rubbish, and that links only work for the editor/translator notes, and not for Weber's own notes - so it is extremely tedious to consult the author's extensive and important comments.

This doesn't detract from the greatness of this text, and specifically the introduction and the included debates about The Protestant Ethic are a tremendous value. I just wish eBook quality was better.
