From a Printz-Honor-winning author, an absorbing novel about a teen boy whose scientist parents take in a chimpanzee. All happy families are alike. Ben Tomlin's unhappy family is unhappy in a very different way. For thirteen years, Ben Tomlin was an only child. But all that changes when his mother brings home Zan--an eight-day-old chimpanzee. Ben's father, a renowned behavioral scientist, has uprooted the family to pursue his latest research project: a high-profile experiment to determine whether chimps can acquire advanced language skills. Ben's parents tell him to treat Zan like a little brother. Ben reluctantly agrees. At least now he's not the only one his father's going to scrutinize. It isn't long before Ben is Zan's favorite, and Ben starts to see Zan as more than just an experiment. His father disagrees. Soon Ben is forced to make a critical choice between what he is told to believe and what he knows to be true--between obeying his father or protecting his brother from an unimaginable fate.

From Publishers Weekly
The victim of a frame-up, Wilmington, Del., police sergeant Lou Razzi loses not only his job but also his wife and daughter when he is sent to prison. Fifteen years later a witness comes forward to clear Razzi, now out of jail and a successful opal miner in Brazil. Returning home, Razzi finds things have changed in Wilmington. His ex-wife has married into a prominent family and his daughter has been adopted by her stepfather. Police procedures, due to the Miranda decision, are different, too: the strong-arm tactics Razzi and his fellow officers once favored are no longer tolerated. When beautiful assistant D.A. Honey Gold decides to teach Razzi the new rules, the sergeant proves as smart and intuitive as he is tough. With Honey's help, he digs further into the incident for which he was framed. While Razzi's early suspicions are so close to the mark that the criminals' unmasking may not surprise readers, former prosecuting attorney Brandt has written a fast-moving first novel that takes a realistic look at the criminal justice system.

From Library Journal
This first-person narrative is an accomplished debut for lawyer Brandt, a former Chief Deputy Attorney General for Delaware. Lou Razzi, a tough Delaware cop is framed, convicted, dismissed from his job, and jailed in the early 1960sjust prior to the Miranda decision. Fifteen years pass; the frame is uncovered; and he returns home from Brazil to settle some scores, as if "the right to remain silent" didn't exist. Detailed, realistic, and with excellent character development and motivation, this is as good as the best in a recent crop of outstanding thrillers by former or current law enforcement officials, e.g., Bob Leuci's Captain Butterfly and Scott Turow's Presumed Innocent . Jean B. Palmer, Andover, Mass.

Good Story that Moves Quickly
By Wayne A. Smith
This is a good and entertaining story set in Wilmington, Delaware.
This murder mystery reminded me somewhat of movies of the same done in the 1940's. It had that kind of snappy air in dialogue and attitude.
A retired detective comes back to town in a deal to let him shake off a false accusation. He is supposed to work one day and then leave his troubles behind him. Wouldn't you know it, that one day gets him embroiled in a murder mystery unusual to sleepy Wilmington, Delaware (this was written pre-Capano) when all he really wants is to forget his past troubles and embrace the quiet life.
This was a fun book, well written and entertaining. Apparantly Mr. Brandt has not again picked up the pen, which is a shame. He ought to give story writing another try.

Murder mystery set in Wilmington, Delaware
By hkephart@umich.edu
The writing is sparse and taught. The bombshell Honey Golden is an inventive creation. The narrator is well-drawn, flawed, yet ultimately triumphant. A great read. I eagerly anticipate future offerings from Mr. Brandt

Taj Mahal (Wonders of the World), by Giles Tillotson

An enduring monument of haunting beauty, the Taj Mahal seems a symbol of stability itself. The familiar view of the glowing marble mausoleum from the gateway entrance offers the very picture of permanence. And yet this extraordinary edifice presents a shifting image to observers across time and cultures. The meaning of the Taj Mahal, the perceptions and responses it prompts, ideas about the building and the history that shape them: these form the subject of Giles Tillotson’s book. More than a richly illustrated history―though it is that as well―this book is an eloquent meditation on the place of the Taj Mahal in the cultural imagination of India and the wider world.

Since its completion in 1648, the mausoleum commissioned by the fifth Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, has come to symbolize many things: the undying love of a man for his wife, the perfection of Mughal architecture, the ideal synthesis of various strands of subcontinental aesthetics, even an icon of modern India itself. Exploring different perspectives brought to the magnificent structure―by a Mughal court poet, an English Romantic traveler, a colonial administrator, an architectural historian, or a contemporary Bollywood filmmaker―this book is an incomparable guide through the varied and changing ideas inspired by the Taj Mahal, from its construction to our day. In Tillotson’s expert hands, the story of a seventeenth-century structure in the city of Agra reveals itself as a story about our own place and time.

Review
This wry, brisk book is a delightful and fascinating excavation of the Taj Mahal's many layers of meanings. Giles Tillotson deploys his formidable knowledge of India's artistic and cultural history to create a kaleidoscopic interpretation of the Taj...[he] unravels the fables and myths incited by this sublime creation, and yet succeeds in keeping its unworldly aura intact. (Sunil Khilnani, author of The Idea of India)

For all its fame, remarkably little has been written on the Taj Majal, and Giles Tillotson's slim and balanced book is, without question, the best short introduction yet produced...This is a much-needed and eminently readable book that is likely to remain a standard work for many years to come. (William Dalrymple Sunday Times 2008-09-07)

[Tillotson's] accessible and enjoyable style will engage a broader readership. Like every author in [Harvard's] "Wonders of the World" series, Tillotson considers not only architectural history but also cultural heritage and resonance--picturesque 18th-century aquatints of the Taj, early 20th-century restorations by Lord Curzon, literary responses such as Rabindranath Tagore's poem ("a teardrop on the cheek of time"), and the famous photo of Princess Diana posing alone in front of the "monument to love" shortly before her marriage break-up...Tillotson airs the many myths and legends with relish; then slays most of them with facts and reason, and a generous helping of illustrations. (Andrew Robinson The Independent 2008-08-22)

The Taj Mahal is one of the most instantly recognizable buildings in the world, endlessly painted and photographed, and currently welcoming an average of 8,000 visitors a day. Giles Tillotson's sprightly account of its structure and history, the stories that have accumulated around it and the impression it has made on tourists down the centuries is a welcome addition to [Harvard's] "Wonders of the World" series. These books are not only architectural monographs; they are equally concerned with what buildings mean, and few structures have meant more different things to people than the Taj Mahal...Witty and authoritative, this book achieves the remarkable feat of making us look again at a building we might otherwise think altogether too familiar. An excellent introduction to the Taj Mahal
By Cherry Fox
This is a splendid and very readable introduction to the Taj Mahal. Giles Tillotson's research cuts away at the various myths that have surrounded this supreme structure, such as the idea that it was designed by a European, or that Shah Jahan, the builder of the Taj, intended to construct another Taj across the river as his tomb, which would have been black in contrast to the Taj Mahal's startling whiteness. Indeed, a lot of myths have built up about the Taj, usually born to serve the prejudices of each particular author, such as P. N. Oak, who claimed that the Taj had been built by a previous Hindu ruler rather than the Muslim Shah Jahan. Tillotson reveals how the Taj has been viewed in the past by quoting by historical accounts of the building, many of which aptly claim to be unable to convey its majesty. Tillotson shows how the treatment of the Taj by the British very much changed from the early nineteenth century, when colonials tended to graffiti and steal pieces from the monument, to later in the century, when Viceroy Lord Curzon empowered efforts to conserve Indian monuments through law (although even he was not adverse to embellishing the Taj with foreign objects, such as a lamp from Cairo). Furthermore, Tillotson relates how the Taj still influences modern architects today, since a replica has recently been built in Dubai. The question of who should care for the Taj on behalf of the Indian nation is still a hot political potato, as Tillotson reports, and there are worries that the building may one day be targeted by Al Qaeda. However, the many excellent illustrations within this book, combined with the views of numerous travellers throughout the centuries, should be enough to compel anyone to visit this fantastic monument, which has been very fittingly described as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

An Accessible Guide to the Most Famous of Buildings
By Rob Hardy
The most famous and easily recognized building in the world quite possibly is the Taj Mahal. It is like no other structure, and is one of the most photographed and visited of architectural sites. Eight thousand visitors a day go through it (only slightly fewer than go through the Sistine Chapel). Although there have been plenty of pictures taken of the place, over the centuries there has not been a great deal of scholarship devoted to it. There was a detailed scholarly monograph in 2006 by Ebba Koch, and Giles Tillotson has drawn upon it and upon many other sources to produce a guide to the building that is slim, accessible, and entertaining. _Taj Mahal_ (Harvard University Press) covers the personalities involved in creating the Taj, the architecture and its sources, its interpretation, and its current status and preservation.

The Taj was completed in 1643. Its builder was the Mogul Emperor Shah Jahan who may have had an eye for design, but could be a cold-blooded warrior. It was a tomb for his best-loved wife, who bore him fourteen children and died giving birth to the last one while she was with him on a military campaign. He went into deep and sincere grief, and after he returned with her body to the great Mogul city of Agra, the stricken emperor planned her tomb. We don't know for sure who the Taj architects were or how much responsibility they had for the eventual look of the building; there are no plans or statements of architectural purpose, and the lack of documentation may be a reason that the Taj has had relatively little scholarship directed toward it. With little documentation about the planning or building of the Taj, for centuries interest groups have been trying to claim it as their own. "For a building that is supposedly a symbol of love," writes Tillotson, the Taj has generated a lot of anger." The Victorians, convinced that no indigenous people could have produced such a masterpiece, developed the ludicrous theory that a visiting European had planned it all. Hindu supremacists would rather not acknowledge that this is a Muslim building, convincing themselves that it was actually produced in accord with ancient Hindu scriptures. A fellow named P. N. Oak published a book in 1968 to show how the Taj is really a Hindu palace (Tillotson calls it a "startling piece of pseudo-scholarship"), and this could be but laughable except that Hindu organizations have used such claims to attempt to wrest control of the site from the Archeological Survey of India which has custodianship of the Taj as a national monument.

Tillotson's book is a perfect guide for the armchair traveler, but there is a final chapter with practical information on how to make a visit to the Taj, and as long as you are in Agra, the other things you can see including the Agra Fort, inside which are palaces that Shah Jahan built. Tillotson addresses the nonsense about the Taj's "real" origins and its other myths with authority. He is a historian specializing in the art and architecture of India, but this guide gives good general information rather than being a scholarly tome. It also has a sense of fun. Although it never mention the Trump Taj Mahal Casino in New Jersey, it does allude to Taj Mahal brand teabags, for instance, and to the popular Hindi film _Bunty aur Babli_, in which flimflam artists sell the Taj to gullible Americans.

A disappointment.
By Carl E. Ward, Jr.
I'd was hoping the book would tell who the architect was, describe how the stone was transported and placed, in other words tell how such a world wonder was constructed before the industrial revolution. But it did not. It read like a very boring doctoral thesis which it may have been. I was very disappointed. The February, '14 National Geographic has a wonderful article on the making of the Cathedral of Florence. Read that instead.

In Search of the Unitive Vision: Letters of Sri Madhava Ashish to an American Businessman, 1978-1997, by Seymour B. Ginsburg

If you want to pursue in a Western way the path that we follow here at Mirtola, you need to study and work with the Gurdjieffian teaching. Thus did the guru Madhava Ashish, at their first meeting, invite American businessman Sy Ginsburg on a spiritual journey that would last 19 years (until the guru's death) and include a lengthy correspondence and annual visits to Sri Madhava Ashish's Mirtola ashram, near Almora, in India's HImalayan foothills. Along the way, the entrepeneur/author would not only be caught up in the teachings of G.I. Gurdjieff, but also in the search for the elusive unitive vision--the world viewed from the perspective of the greater Self and not the personality. In this remarkable spiritual document, the reader shares the search, increasingly catching glimpses of the unitive vision as the book draws toward a close that is also an opening out, into the vaster dimensions of the human mind.

A Spiritual Journey
By patricia m. finkle
IN SEARCH OF THE UNITIVE VISION by Seymour B. Ginsburg is the account of the author's encounter and subsequent relationship with an extrordinarily wise teacher, Sri Madhava Ashish, who in the Western esoteric tradition would be known as an Initiate. Ashish, of Scottish descent, had spent virtually his entire adult life in India engaged in the Spiritual pursuit of the ultimate Transcendent state of Consciousness or, as termed in the book's title, The Unitive Vision where the identity of Self, the root of consciousness, with the Highest Reality is experienced. The author, who conveys his point of departure by presenting himself unpretentiously as a businessman, is initially skeptical and generally a logical positivist in his philosophical approach to life; however, following a family tragedy he sought something more than the ephemeral rewards of personal achievement. With the same great vigor and enthusiasm that had brought him worldly success, the author now began an adventure in unknown territory sparing no effort to satisfy his persistent curiosity.
The book charts the author's relationship with Ashish and his developing familiarity with esotericism, through books, contacts with important figures, channelling and membership in schools of spiritual development. This relationship was conducted over a nineteen year period through letters and yearly visits; the corpus of letters captures the thrust and depth of Ashish's teaching and documents his generosity and guidance in reponse to Mr. Ginsburg's probing questions about mediums, the collective unconsciousness, personal dreams, and inner experience. Gems of knowedge are conveyed throughout the letters i.e.Ashish's observations on the relationship of movements to the alterations in consciousness.
Ashish is a master therapist as well as a Spiritual Master and guides the author through the territory of his personal issues, psychological defenses and identifications to achieve an integration of heart and mind. Ashish repeatedly stresses the importance of first hand experience which cannot be gotten from books or personal contact with those who have experienced something of a higher nature even though they might provide inspiration and motivation. He directs the author to relax his logical mind which has served him so well, bringing him to the quest, but now would hinder him from opening to That Reality which is beyond his security net. The author joined and later became a facilitator in a Gurdjieff group, a leader of a Theosophical study group, and organized yearly conferences where the key ideas of Gurdjieff were discussed and eminent Gurdjieff scholars participated and submitted manuscripts that were later published. The letters document Ashish's observations on these activities but also document Ashish's unrelenting message that the path is inward even if group activity might enhance the integration of the personality and generate motivation.
I would highly recommend this book which in a wonderfully accessible and articulate manner brings to us the teaching of an exemplary Man as well as the record of a seeker's developing awareness . The message will greatly contribute to the understanding of the well-seasoned seeker as well as someone who is embarking on the spiritual journey with skepticism and diffidence. The approach, faade and substance of Ashish's teaching is utterly nondenominational and the message does not violate the tenets of any religion because of the respect shown to the essential undergirding of all approaches to spirituality which is Love, the most direct means to transcendence.

A Review of "In search of the Unitive Vision" by Ginsburg.
By Jagdish C. Nautiyal
Books about spirituality are so common in the market these days that it becomes difficult for even a serious seeker to sort writings dealing with the real from fantasy or downright fraud. The plethora of consciously or unconsciously written mixture of truths, half-truths and lies about man's spiritual quest, nevertheless, does keep on throwing up gems about reality, even if to remind us that there IS a reality far greater and stranger than anything that the human mind can invent or discover. Seymour Ginsburg's "In Search of the Unitive Vision" is one such gem and is the story of an honest seeker after the mysteries of life and death who was lucky enough to come in contact with a remarkable man who through sheer hard work and unwavering dedication had resolved that mystery for himself and was willing to help others who wanted to do the same.
In our "global village" today, it is of significance to note that the author of the book is a successful American businessman while his mentor, Sri Madhava Ashish, was a Hindu Vaishnava monk of mixed English and Scottish descent who spent 55 of the 77 years of his life in the Himalayan foothills of India. It is the identity of the individual with the universal that needs to be experienced, Sri Madhava Ashish argues, before we can see life in its full glory through what he called the "Unitive Vision."
This excellent book can be described as the inner autobiography of Ginsburg that truly reflects the aspirations, doubts, trials and tribulations of a seeker of truth. It also asserts that the inner path is a path of self-improvement, not in the sense of acquiring any material benefits (such as name, fame, power or wealth) but improvement aimed at reaching that state of "perfection" which is the birth right of every man and woman merely because one is a human being. The search for this perfection has nothing to do with one's nationality, religion, profession, gender or cultural bias. It has very much to do with recognizing one's inevitable biases and gradually getting rid of them so that one can look at oneself in a reasonably dispassionate manner. Ginsburg brings out a very natural unfolding of the issues faced by a spiritual aspirant and does not hesitate to point out where he found that his preconceived ideas had to be abandoned when they failed the test of objective reasoning.
Any book on spirituality gets its life not only from the story of the writer but the living contact it is able to engender with a real knower of truth. Sri Madhava Ashish was such a knower and Ginsburg is able to create an atmosphere of the palpable presence of the master by providing quotations from his letters and articles.
This excellent book as a "must read" for all old and young seekers after truth all over the world.
There are a few repetitions but they seem necessary to reinforce some information which may otherwise go unregistered in the mind of the a reader; and I could find only ONE typographical error in the entire book!

A Piece of Truth
By Keith A. Buzzell, D.O.
During the past decade a host of books that concern man's spiritual quest have appeared. Unfortunately, most of them focus the readers attention on conclusions, convictions and pronouncements on 'the' way to come to spirtiual fulfillment. Not so, thankfully, with Sy Ginsburg's "In Search of the Unitive Vision - Letters of Sri Madhava Ashish to an American Businessman 1978-1997". In this compact [280 pages], highly readable collection lie innumerable pearls of practical and critical advise, focusing throughout on the uniqueness of man's capacity to stand in the 'awareness that he is aware'. Refreshingly, Ginsburg does not spare himself in his selection of answers given by Ashish to his [Sy's] questions. When an author is able and willing to expose his own superficialities and recurrant inabliity to stay on track a taste of reality and the wish for truth in the spiritual pursuit is evident.
Ginsburg intersperses his lively coorespondance with a selection of of four essays by Ashish that highlight his ablility to be succinct and practical in his exploration of spiritual questions.
This book is a significant contribution to the reconciliation of the inner and outer life of man. Ginsburgs growth in Being, growth in his own pursuit of this inner-outer reconcilliation, is ably reflected in the consistancy of his search and in the perseptive help given him by this quite remarkable 'englishman-become-guide'.
The book is a gift worth sharing with all of your co-searchers.
Keith A. Buzzell, D.O.

The Silent End, by Samuel Sattin

In a mist-soaked town in the Pacific Northwest three teenagers find themselves pitted against an unearthly menace that dwells beneath the foundations of their high school...

Eberstark is an outcast and he's tired of pretending everything is fine. His mother disappeared almost a year ago after a long battle with depression. His father is conducting experiments and running around town in the middle of night with a mysterious man known only as The Hat, ranting to Eberstark about beasts no one else can see.

Then on Halloween night, Eberstark, alongside his only friends Lexi and Gus, discovers something in the woods to challenge his father's apparent insanity: a wounded monster. Rather than stir the town into a frenzy, the three friends hide the creature and are pulled into a web of conspiracy, dream-logic, and death. Faced down by living trucks, mirror-dwelling psychopaths, and hellish entities who lurk behind friendly faces, Eberstark, Lexi, and Gus find themselves battling to save not just themselves, but the soul of their quiet little town.

"Once or twice a year I'll start reading a book expecting it to be goodand it'll turn out to be superb. In the case of Samuel Sattin's TheSilent End, that rare occurrence was made even stranger by the fact that the novel mashes together an incredible array of genres and walks abizarre line between a YA novel, a creepy and very atmospheric mystery, and hardcore horror. With enoughmonsters, bullies, gore, and action to satisfy any fiction lover, TheSilent End is the kind of adventure narrative full of relatablecharacters that gets young readers hooked on books and satisfies adultreaders who enjoy weird, eerie tales, and pulling off both things isremarkable. That being said, perhaps more impressive is the fact thatthe author manages to keep readers engaged for 524 pages."

not a typical YA
By Janelle Wilbanks
This is a rare YA book from Ragnarok Publishing.

I am not entirely sure why they don’t publish more novels suitable for Young Adult, but I do know exactly why I don’t often read in the genre: there is a fundamental dishonesty in some of those books, they’ve been sanitized, and they try to fit the mold of what they think teenagers want to read. Often this succeeds, but it doesn’t make for entertaining reading. When I was a teenager, some of us were swearing, some of us were getting high behind the gas station at lunch, and some of us were exploring our sexualities with actual real live people. Not much of that happens in YA, and not only is that dishonest, but it’s boring.

Samuel Sattin has written The Silent End for teenagers who are actually teenagers, and not blocky goody two-shoes. From the back copy, I could tell that this was going to be a little deeper, and a little more wistful than the average book aimed for teenagers.

In a mist-covered town in the Pacific Northwest, three teenagers find themselves pitted against an unearthly menace that dwells beneath the foundations of their high school…

Eberstark is an outcast and he’s tired of pretending everything is fine. His mother disappeared almost a year ago after a long battle with depression. His father is conducting experiments and running around town in the middle of night with a mysterious man known only as The Hat, ranting to Eberstark about beasts no one else can see.

Then, on Halloween night, Eberstark, alongside his only friends Lexi and Gus, discovers something in the woods to challenge the notion of his father’s apparent insanity: a wounded monster.

Sattin’s particular talent (at least in this book) is tone, followed swiftly by character development. The novel is set in the Pacific Northwest, and somehow his word choice conveys that his characters live in a rain-drenched world, and they see the sun but rarely. There are no turns of phrase that would belong in a book set in Fresno, California, or Mexico City. Here, the setting fits the story, for the story is deeply melancholy, a little frightening, and a lot of the plot remains obscured for a good chunk of the novel.

The characters are extremely well thought out. It’s a book set in a small town, so it can’t really get away with having anonymous store owners, teachers, or kids the main character knows personally. Everyone mentioned has just enough detail that I wonder if Sattin created a comprehensive map and filled it in with details of every single citizen before he even started writing. It has that kind of realism.

The rest of it is not so realistic. The back cover copy advertises dream logic, and that is an understatement. As we get deeper and deeper into the book, we begin to see that there is this miasma of unreality that settled over the town long ago, and it’s just now being noticed. The main character, Eberstark, has had these perceptions of people (his friend’s father, his mother, etc.) that first read as — here’s another slightly depressed grown-up. It’s sad, but normal. And then… the mist starts drifting away, and things like depression or inertia become a hell of a lot more sinister.

This book is worth reading, if only for the shivers.

Great characters and descriptive imagination of this strange and scary town
By Tim Ward
Even coming in knowing The Silent End is going to be a different kind of story didn’t prepare me for the incredible creativity I soon discovered. The writing adds artistic flair to what you could call a thrilling monster ride for teenage geeks who find the courage to confront their worst nightmares. The first chapter starts off very strong with a combination of empathy for our main character’s loss of his mother, a sense that something is off with their reality, and yet the humorous camaraderie that he has with his friends grounds us into feeling like we’d want to join them in their upcoming adventure.

Here’s a sample of the first lines:

Have you ever heard of an airplane vanishing? A set of engines, rumbling into fair weather, a moment later eaten by atmosphere?

Well, that’s how Mother’s disappearance was for me. A traceless beacon. A silent end. It was as if she dematerialized from her bedroom as a midnight sacrifice, something for the monsters Father now hunted.

…”You know she hangs out with us because she’s bored, right?”
“Shut up, Eberstark. ” He tilted his body with un-delicate poise as he said my name (my last name, actually—it was what everyone had called me since middle school). Gus, while lithe, had a kinetic
personality. A confidence so inbred it made me doubt my own. “You think everybody pities us. Which, you know, makes me think you really just pity yourself.”
“No, I’m just sick and tired of being branded an outcast because of your need to be so blatantly public about your hobbies.”
“ My hobbies? Are you kidding me? I seem to remember someone crying, yes, CRYING, when his Techno-Lorque Legion got crushed in the Attactix tournament last year. Don’t try and under-nerd me , man. It’ll be an uphill battle.” He noticed my costume then, as if for the first time, and gave a double take. “What are you supposed to be, anyway?”
“A shadow.”

Before his mother disappeared, she claimed to see things in mirrors. The author displays throughout a gift at providing details in the story to make us share in his main character’s paranoia, as well as empathize with his desire to find courage in the face of losing his mom, and with building a stronger self-esteem in light of how his dad treats him and how he feels as an outcast in his school.

There is so much in this story to discover, I don’t want to spoil anything more. The author continually impressed me with plot twists, where not only didn’t I think he’d take the story in the direction he chose, but he also added such intricate details to this surreal haunted town that so many paragraphs were a treat to the senses.

The only drawback I found was the character interest weakened as he worked through plot points between the mid-point and the climax. It may be that the focus going into the weirdness of the world and what they had to do meant less emphasis on them as characters–though there were major points delivered in their character arcs…it’s hard to explain. I can’t say specifically what he did without spoiling anything, but my experience was I wanted more emotional engagement during some key moments and as they moved from one plot point to the next. What I loved about the beginning was the equal balance between them as friends and individuals–he used humor well to entertain between big moments and where the focus was on the strangeness of their situation. As the strangeness took over, it read like a book with too much action. In this part of the story, I debated finishing. I’m glad I did, but I’m hoping future works will keep all of what made this story special more equal throughout.

I will anxiously await the next story by Mr. Sattin and loudly encourage others to enjoy this one of a kind journey into his imagination.

Here there be monsters...
By vinegartom
Sattin is at his best here with The Silent End, integrating strong shades of the bizarre with the quotidian in deft stylistic form. It reads as if the likes of Stephen King rewrote Goonies, like a hundred sleepy Pacific Northwest villages all dreamt the same sleepy dream and then had a sudden onset of night terrors, like drollness of your high school had a presence of mind all its own, and a hundred other skittering, squealing phantasms. Sometimes nightmares make the best dreams.

Beginning with the town of Mossglow and a small group of friends thrown together against the slings and arrows of outrageous parenting, middling bullies and a menagerie of high school faculty and their respective administration, it progresses down still stranger paths- along a misty coast and into a chimerical world of living dreams. Here the safeties of childhood vanish in the fog. Here there be monsters.

The Silent End was written as a YA novel, but is one in a long tradition of such novels that reads well for all ages and interests. I am proud to recommend it.

The Chicken and the Quetzal: Incommensurate Ontologies and Portable Values in Guatemala's Cloud Forest, by Paul Kockelman

In The Chicken and the Quetzal Paul Kockelman theorizes the creation, measurement, and capture of value by recounting the cultural history of a village in Guatemala's highland cloud forests and its relation to conservation movements and ecotourism. In 1990 a group of German ecologists founded an NGO to help preserve the habitat of the resplendent quetzal—the strikingly beautiful national bird of Guatemala—near the village of Chicacnab. The ecotourism project they established in Chicacnab was meant to provide new sources of income for its residents so they would abandon farming methods that destroyed quetzal habitat. The pressure on villagers to change their practices created new values and forced negotiations between indigenous worldviews and the conservationists' goals. Kockelman uses this story to offer a sweeping theoretical framework for understanding the entanglement of values as they are interpreted and travel across different and often incommensurate ontological worlds. His theorizations apply widely to studies of the production of value, the changing ways people make value portable, and value's relationship to ontology, affect, and selfhood.

Review
"This is a big book, speaking to the hard and intractable questions about the distinctions between the particular and the universal, the private and the public, and the intimate and the ultimate. Insofar as philosophy has tried to understand the human condition as bridging the mental and physical world, Paul Kockelman's book is one of the boldest things out there. I love this book and its analytical project. Anthropology needs something like this, now." (Bill Maurer, author of How Would You Like to Pay? How Technology Is Changing the Future of Money)

"The Chicken and the Quetzal is a masterpiece. Paul Kockelman’s finely grained ethnography of an ecotourism NGO in Guatemala's highlands opens up new ways to think about meaning, value, ontology, ecology, development, indigenous studies, and more. A broad audience from advanced undergraduates to specialists will benefit from the insights of one of our generation's most rigorous and original thinkers presented in beautifully written prose. The Chicken and the Quetzal has the power to make one see the world in a different way." (Julia Elyachar, author of Markets of Dispossession: NGOs, Economic Development, and the State in Cairo)

"The Chicken and the Quetzal is exemplary of semiotic ethnography, a thriving genre in linguistic anthropology that details much more than the linguistic aspect of social life.... Its theoretical contribution to linguistic anthropology is significant, and it offers an invitation to dialogue with other ways of doing anthropology and social science.... I encourage you to read the book, to respond, and so to generate the value that the semiotic process produces, coined in the currency of social relationality." (Christopher Ball Anthropological Quarterly 2016-06-01)

Likely to frustrate and confuse

I must’ve read the summary for this book too quickly before requesting it. I assumed that as the cover promised it would detail the birds of Guatemala from the chicken to the quetzal… So, I was a bit hard-hit by the academic “Introduction” that reads like the first part of a dissertation because it laboriously summarizes the concepts, terms, and all major research in the field of eco-tourism and at-length summarizes what will be discussed in each of the coming chapters, despite the relative brevity of the book as a whole. As a thesis would, the first chapter then summarizes the history of eco-tourism in the central region of Guatemala. The usual academic pattern is broken in a section called “Priming the Ecotourism Experience,” where questions such as: “What are the tour and the accommodations like [at the Proyecto Ecologico Quetzal]?” and “How do we get there?” are answered. “In the ecotourism program you will travel to see and experience the cloud forest and learn about the life and culture of the Q’eqchi’ people living near the forest. Your accommodations in a typical Q’eqchi’ home are rustic. Their homes are constructed with wood walls and dirt floor, and there is an open fire inside the home over which your food will be cooked” (28). Note, that his food was cooked for him… I doubt some that can cook will not be allowed to volunteer to help these extremely impoverished Guatemalans. Kockelman has a section later in the chapter on “Immaterial Labor, Incommensurate Values, and Intersubjective Intentions” and uses Marxist and Kantian terms to explain these but in the spirit of ecotourism, I doubt hard labor is the point of touring an ecologically beautiful environment. Chapter 2 is dedicated to “poultry.” Kockelman explains that the “local ways of framing the relation between women and chickens” frame the key themes of this section, “ontology (what kinds of entities there are in the world), affect (cognitive and corporeal attunements to such entities), and selfhood (relatively reflexive centers of attunement) (52). This is another typical critical trick. Kockelman starts with a basic emotional subject or the archetype of farming and chicken raising by small family units. The book is about ecotourism, but instead of exploring the environmental solutions and complications of the Proyecto Ecologico Quetzal program, the author digresses from the concrete chicken to the chicken as a surreal entity. Just as feces is feces, a chicken is a chicken. The chicken has been introduced to the region five hundred years ago, as Kockelman points out. Thus, the chicken or how the chicken is raised by women in this region are not questions of deep rooted ancient culture that needs to be preserved. If the chicken is still a nutritious and economical good for the locals, this domestic industry should continue. If parrots can legally be traded today and they can make the locals more money, they should switch to caring for this commodity. But, even if the chicken and the love between the Guatemalan women and their chickens must be protected, the criticism should not diverge into mythology or theology in a discussion of the “corporeal” and the “entities” of the “world.”
I do not recommend reading this book to eco-tourists or to ecologists because it is likely to frustrate and confuse both.
