The Master Switch: The Rise and Fall of Information Empires, by Tim Wu

It is easy to forget that every development in the history of the American information industry–from the telephone to radio to film–once existed in an open and chaotic marketplace inhabited by entrepreneurs and utopians, just as the Internet does today. Each of these, however, grew to be dominated by a monopolist or cartel. In this pathbreaking book, Tim Wu asks: will the Internet follow the same fate? Could the Web–the entire flow of American information–come to be ruled by a corporate leviathan in possession of "the master switch"?

Analyzing the strategic maneuvers of today’s great information powers–Apple, Google, and an eerily resurgent AT&T–Wu uncovers a time-honored pattern in which invention begets industry and industry begets empire. He shows how a battle royale for Internet’s future is brewing, and this is one war we dare not tune out

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. According to Columbia professor and policy advocate Wu (Who Controls the Internet), the great information empires of the 20th century have followed a clear and distinctive pattern: after the chaos that follows a major technological innovation, a corporate power intervenes and centralizes control of the new medium--the master switch. Wu chronicles the turning points of the century' s information landscape: those decisive moments when a medium opens or closes, from the development of radio to the Internet revolution, where centralizing control could have devastating consequences. To Wu, subjecting the information economy to the traditional methods of dealing with concentrations of industrial power is an unacceptable control of our most essential resource. He advocates not a regulatory approach but rather a constitutional approach that would enforce distance between the major functions in the information economy--those who develop information, those who own the network infrastructure on which it travels, and those who control the venues of access--and keep corporate and governmental power in check. By fighting vertical integration, a Separations Principle would remove the temptations and vulnerabilities to which such entities are prone. Wu' s engaging narrative and remarkable historical detail make this a compelling and galvanizing cry for sanity--and necessary deregulation--in the information age.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* A veteran of Silicon Valley and professor at Columbia University, Wu is an author and policy advocate best known for coining the term net neutrality. Although the Internet has created a world of openness and access unprecedented in human history, Wu is quick to point out that the early phases of telephony, film, and radio offered similar opportunities for the hobbyist, inventor, and creative individual, only to be centralized and controlled by corporate interests, monopolized, broken into smaller entities, and then reconsolidated. Wu calls this the Cycle, and nowhere is it more exemplary than in the telecommunications industry. The question Wu raises is whether the Internet is different, or whether we are merely in the early open phase of a technology that is to be usurped and controlled by profiteering interests. Central in the power struggle is the difference between the way Apple Computer and Google treat content, with Apple attempting to control the user experience with slick products while Google endeavors to democratize content, giving the user choice and openness. This is an essential look at the directions that personal computing could be headed depending on which policies and worldviews come to dominate control over the Internet. --David Siegfried

Brilliant and Informative
By Amazon Customer
Warning: This is not light reading. The book is well-written but is not designed as entertainment. If, however, you are concerned about the Internet and potentially where it might go in the near future, or more specifically, how it might wind up controlled, this book will be an interesting and informative read. Important too because communication and information dissemination are vital to the freedom of us all.

Columbia University Professor Tim Wu takes us on an in-depth tour of the history of the communication empires of telephone, radio, television, and now the Internet. Wu's analyses and conclusions are both brilliant as well as at times somewhat surprising. Every page gives evidence of Wu's thorough research, careful thinking and insights that went into the writing of this fine work.

The internet has become part of the lives of almost everyone, with its freeing and empowering presence; in fact in important ways it has become indispensable. A not-too-surprising worry might be that the federal government may someday try to control it, not so overwhelmingly as does the government of China of course, but the possibility is there.

What Wu so sagatiously points out is that that threat of control could just as easily, or actually more easily, come from the private sector, because in fact the existence of the internet and its smooth functioning are dependent, not on the government, but private enterprise. A different kind of monopoly looms ahead of us as a distinct danger, and this present information age presents new policy and regulation challenges.

One hopes that the right government officials at the federal level take heed to this awesomely researched book.

If you would like to understand more accurately recent decades as well as the present time the huge corporations that have in the past but also could one of these days control the ways and means of communication, by all means give this worthy work a read.

Highly recommended.

The Incredible History of Information Technology
By Veil_Lord
Unless you're very young, you have memory of the "Dark Ages" of technology. Yes, there was a time before the Internet...even a time before the ancient 14 kbs modem. I know it's hard for us to believe, but you used to have to be there if somebody was calling AND you didn't know who it was until you picked up the phone! The answering machine could have been available in the 1950s, but why didn't they come out until a few decades ago?

The book has interesting points on technology cycles, which I'll get into in a moment, but first I'd like to congratulate the author on doing such a great job of giving a background history lesson. The topic helps because the history of information empires is every bit as interesting as the rise of military empires. It's all about strategies, "bloody" battles, and luck. It's just the weapons used that differ. Still, most of us have seen even exciting history made boring by poor writing. Mr. Wu keeps things interesting by giving the personal reasons for certain decisions and the circumstances leading to them, not just a bunch of dry dates. Some of the history discussed I was familiar with, but a lot of it was brand new to me.

Several ideas presented on the cycles were thought provoking. Most of us are conditioned to immediately think monopoly = bad, but the point of view of the monopolists helps explain why society allowed them to exist. For example, before modern telephone infrastructure existed it almost took a gigantic AT&T to have the drive to force to link up every person to a phone line; while their methods of dealing with opposition were at times abhorrent, they still succeeded in using the monopoly's advantages (economies of scale, no duplication of research by different companies, steady income, etc.) to do a great deal of good. Bell Labs not only researched phone related technologies for the company but also provided resources and advancements in entirely unrelated areas. On the other hand, all was not altruistic. The same advantages that helped it expand and provide service also stifled progress as the monopoly jealously guarded itself against competitors and devoured or squashed possible competitors. They succeeded in connecting nearly everybody for the common good, even rural farms that likely would have been unconnected far longer because of greater costs per user in small population areas. However, those who are old enough will remember when there was only one choice of phone and it was an AT&T phone only. Once AT&T was broken up, we saw tremendous advances in technology and cost benefits to customers. The point being, things aren't purely black and white.

The issues of information control and free speech were also fascinating. To me the most interesting was censorship in Hollywood. It's a lesson in unintended consequences. The big studios' very "monopoly" allowed them to succumb to rules of conduct that had married couples depicted sleeping in separate beds for years. In that case rules came from the private sector in the form of religious groups threatening boycotts. There too you see a dichotomy. On one hand, the threat was private individuals in a sense voting with their money and what could be more democratic than voting? On the other hand though, people who didn't agree with those rules had their ability to watch uncensored materials taken away from them in the name of somebody else's view of the public good. It's this kind of struggle for balance we see over and over and over again with the advent of new technologies.

I love reading about history and watching documentaries. The adage "History repeats itself." is shown to be true time after time. It's funny how we all think we're so unique, doing things for the first time, but looking back (in some form) most everything's been done before. From the phones, to radio, to the Internet, you can see how the cycle of inventor becomes a wide open free-for-all becomes a tightly controlled industry, and eventually is usurped by some new idea from the outside that changes the rules of the game. It's all one big cycle of progress.

Now if only I could figure out what the next major cycle will be, I'd be a very rich man...

A complex, complete and compelling story of business
By Mark P. McDonald
The Master Switch is part history, business theory and technology presented in a clear and enjoyable read. This is neither a business book, nor a history book, nor a novel but it has the best elements of all three. Some advice for the reader, be prepared to read a book about business information and technology this is deep, complex, expansive and thoroughly enjoyable.

Wu demonstrates throughout the book his ability to research and capture the historical events that led to the world we have today and present them more like James Michener than a dry recitation. The details and descriptions led me to feel like I was reading a historical novel more than a business book. Yet all of the conversation revolves round issues of information, technology and business ownership of it.

Wu demonstrates his business thinking through the book and research findings. This is a business book as it discusses how information and new technologies often start out as an explosion of small companies that coalesce into a few dominate firms that then often explode into smaller more innovative companies. Those ideas, the decisions and actions behind them are the context that gives the business history context.

The Master Switch is a rare combination of history, theory and technology. People looking to read the book from one of these perspectives will either be delighted or deeply disappointed. As a history, the book is a delight as I learned things I never knew before. As a business book, one with a very clear argument, sequential prose and an explicit `bottom line' this book suffers because it meanders through the history parts. Readers looking for a business book should reset their expectations and get the Master Switch. Reset their expectations from the perspective that rather than loading your brain with `programmed' messages, it may be better to get a broader perspective that will let you think through these critical issues. Setting your expectation to read something enjoyable, informative and comprehensive and you will not be disappointed.

Absolutely stunning artwork; more of a picture book than a graphic novel
By Karissa Eckert
I got an eGalley of this book to review through NetGalley(dot)com. Thanks to Dark Horse and NetGalley for giving me a chance to review this book. This book was full of absolutely stunning illustrations paired with a gothic and sweet story.

The story is about a young boy named Sasha who has been abandoned by his parents. He ventures into the woods and befriends a black cat. Together they stumble upon the Misty Circus. As part of the Misty Circus they go on a number of adventures.

The illustrations throughout this book are absolutely stunning and beautiful. They all have a very beautiful gothic, sweet, and melancholy tone to them which matches the story perfectly. I really enjoyed looking at these beautiful and somewhat odd pictures.

The story is simple, sweet, and magical. The story has a gothic flare to it with deep dark woods and witches. The Misty Circus is a magical place. This book features two smaller stories. The first is about Sasha finding the Misty Circus. The second is about Sasha journeying to a land full of witches and befriending a lonely young witch. The story has a heavy French overtone to it, the poems are in French (with translation to English) and the pictures have a French flare to them.

These are stories that would be appropriate for all ages. Younger children might be a bit scared at the idea of Sasha's father abandoning him and also maybe a bit scared of the witches.

Overall I really really enjoyed this book. It has beautiful pictures and a gothically sweet story. Sasha is a young boy that is a bit different and finds his place in life at the Misty Circus. The friendship between him and his cat is touching as well. I highly recommend this to those who love fantasy graphic novels; although this is more of a picture book than a true graphic novel.

Macbeth the Graphic Novel: Plain Text, by William Shakespeare

The complete play translated into plain English. It's 11th century Scotland. Macbeth, Thane of Glamis, is one of King Duncan's greatest war captains. Upon returning from a battle with the rebellious Thane of Cawdor, Macbeth and Banquo encounter three witches, who prophecy that Macbeth will become Thane of Cawdor and then King. They also prophecy that Banquo will become the father of kings. When Lady Macbeth hears this, she is determined to push her husband to take fate into his own hands and make himself king by murdering Duncan. Macbeth is reluctant to harm Duncan. But, when the King makes arrangements to visit Macbeth's castle, the opportunity presents itself. Pressed on by his wife, Macbeth kills Duncan and blames the King's drunken attendants, who he also kills. However, Macbeth is racked with guilt and begins to see apparitions. When the body is discovered, Malcolm and Donalbain, the King's sons, are suspicious of Macbeth and flee for their lives. To everyone else, it looks as if the sons have been the chief conspirators and Macbeth is crowned King of Scotland. Banquo's suspicions grow, based on his encounter with the witches and Macbeth is wary of the second prophecy concerning Banquo's offspring. Macbeth hires assassins to kill Banquo and his son, Fleance. Banquo is murdered that night, but Fleance escapes. The bloody ghost of Banquo appears to Macbeth at a feast, tormenting his already guilty conscience. In addition, Macduff, once a comrade of Macbeth, has fled after the King's sons to England, as he also suspects Macbeth. In revenge, Macbeth butchers Macduff's entire household. Macduff and the King's sons raise an army in England and march against Macbeth, who is given another prophecy by the witches, as he prepares for the assault. They tell him his throne is safe until Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane and he will not die by the hand of any man born of a woman. Macbeth now feels invincible. Lady Macbeth, on the other hand, has been slowly driven mad by her dreams, in the wake of Duncan's murder. She sleepwalks and eventually kills herself. Macbeth learns that many of his lords are deserting and joining Malcolm's army, which approaches Dunsinane under cover of boughs, which they've cut from the trees of Birnam Wood. Macbeth and Macduff eventually meet on the bloody battlefield. Macbeth laughs derisively, relating the witches' prophecy. But Macduff retorts that he was from his mother's womb untimely ripp'd and not (technically) of woman born. The play ends with the death of Macbeth and Malcolm is crowned King of Scotland.

Review
"I'm fascinated by your approach to the play and its language. I find them gripping, dramatic and, although for me the original Shakespeare is always my reason for turning to these plays, I think that what you are doing in illuminating and making perhaps more lucid, especially for young people, is clever and meaningful." Patrick Stewart, Actor

About the Author
William Shakespeare is one of the most widely read authors and possibly the best dramatist ever to live. The actual date of his birth is not known but, traditionally, April 23 1564, has been his accepted birthday (St George's Day). He died on the same date in 1616, aged 52.The life of William Shakespeare can be divided into three acts. The first 20 years of his life were spent in Stratford-upon-Avon where he grew up, went to school, got married and became a father. The next 25 years he spent as an actor and playwright in London and he spent his last few years back in Stratford-upon-Avon where he enjoyed his retirement in moderate wealth gained from his successful years in the theatre.William was the eldest son of tradesman John Shakespeare and Mary Arden, and the third of eight children. His father was later elected mayor of Stratford which was the highest post a man in civic politics could attain. In sixteenth-century England, William was lucky to survive into adulthood; syphilis, scurvy, smallpox, tuberculosis, typhus and dysentery shortened life expectancy at the time to approximately 35 years. The Bubonic Plague took the lives of many and was believed to have taken the lives of three of William's seven siblings.Little is known of William's childhood other than it is thought that he attended the local grammar school where he studied Latin and English literature. In 1582, at the age of 18, William married a local farmer's daughter, Anne Hathaway, who was eight years his senior and three months pregnant. During their marriage they had three children: Susanna, born on May 26th 1583 and twins, Hamnet and Judith, born on February 2nd 1585. Hamnet, William's only son, caught Bubonic Plague and died aged just 11.Five years into his marriage William moved to London and appeared in many small parts at The Globe theatre, one of the biggest theatres in England. His first appearance in public as a poet was in 1593 with "Venus and Adonis" and again in the following year with "The Rape of Lucrece". Later on, in 1599, he became joint proprietor of The Globe. When Queen Elizabeth died in 1603, she was succeeded by her cousin King James of Scotland. King James supported William and his band of actors and gave them license to call themselves the "King's Men" in return for entertaining the court regularly. In just 23 years, between approximately 1590 and 1613, William Shakespeare is attributed with writing 38 plays, 154 sonnets and 5 poems. "Love's Labour's Lost" and "The Comedy of Errors" are thought to be among Shakespeare's earliest plays followed by "The Two Gentlemen of Verona" and "Romeo and Juliet". His final play was Henry VIII, two years before he died. The cause of his death remains unknown. He was buried on April 25th, two days after his death, at the Church of the Holy Trinity (the same Church where he had been baptised 52 years earlier). His gravestone bears these words (which it is believed William himself wrote):-"Good friend for Jesus sake forbearTo dig the dust enclosed here!Blest be the man that spares these stones,And curst be he that moves my bones"At the time of his death, William had substantial properties, which he bestowed on his family and associates from the theatre. In his will he left his wife, the former Anne Hathaway, his second best bed!William Shakespeare's last direct descendant died in 1670. She was his granddaughter, Elizabeth.

Outstanding and accessible
By Barry K
This is a brilliantly illustrated and faithfully rendered version of the classic play. The plain text is very close to the original, just easier for the modern reader to follow. The classic parts are unchanged. My teenagers grabbed the book as soon as they saw it and couldn't wait to take it to school. The artwork enhances the play, and if you can't get to a good production, this is a very good way to get an introduction.

This is a great way to get teens to want to read Macbeth. My teen was able to understand the play and complete all the assignments for his English class. The graphics were wonderful. I would highly recommend this to parents to help the student understand Shakespeare.

Starlight, Time and the New Physics, by Dr. John Hartnett

Despite increasingly compelling arguments for biblical creation, many still doubt the Bible's clear timescale because, they think, it is impossible for light to have reached Earth in only a few thousands years from stars that are millions of light years away. This misconception is often the ultimate stumbling block to the straightforward acceptance of the Bible even the gospel itself. Positively, the answer to the creationists starlight problem falls out of the same equations that, in the process, do away with many of the props for big bang thinking. Inspired by the pioneering creationist physicist D. Russell Humphreys and building on the work of secular cosmologist Moshe Carmeli, physics professor John Hartnett employs the evidence which demands another revolution in cosmological physics. Supporting technical papers make up a series of technical appendices, so that the main text is easily digestible for the intelligent layperson.

Review
Hartnett...took Carmeli's work and demonstrated the astounding conclusions that arise from it when the universe is viewed from a Biblical perspective. The idea that God created the universe in six days is now not only intellectually respectable, it's a far better explanation for what we observe than its competitors. --Alex Williams, former consultant for UN's International Atomic Energy Agency

The revelations in this book are simply stunning and all the more exciting because the author has had a number of his papers on the new physics published in reputable secular journals. --Philip Bell, Scientist

About the Author
John G. Hartnett received both his B.Sc. And his Ph.D. with distinction from the Department of Physics at the University of Western Australia. He works with the Frequency Standards and Metrology research group at the same university, where he holds the rank of Associate Professor (the equivalent of Reader in the UK which would be Full Professor in the USA). Dr. Hartnett has published more than 120 papers in scientific journals and holds two patents. He is a part-time speaker for Creation Ministries International and is an effective communicator on the relevance of creation to the gospel and the implications of evolutionary teaching in society today.

Best explanation for young earth creation
By Dave SK
Starlight, Time and the New Physics Cosmology is very difficult to understand since most lack the physics and mathematical background. Dr Harnett's book is by far the most convincing theory. He never claimed to be 100% correct. When I took college classes in Cosmology, Relativity, Particle Physics, all my professors mentioned that they all have different positions and not all agreed with each other. When my professors derived the solutions (Big Bang theory), numerous assumptions and simplifications are made based on their positions. They are also honest to point out that some scientific data interpretation can be wrong and their job is to keep looking. Neither camp (Big Bang or Creation) can recreate the early physics from the beginning. It is how you (or your world view) interpret the current observable data. Dr Hartnett based his work on Carmelian theory (Big Bang but minority view) and is able to show his solutions fit very well with the Creation framework. Dr Hartnett also has a companion video which may be easier for some versus the book (click on the link at beginning of my comment for the video).

beyond Einstein
By A Customer
Well, the details of the equations(appendix) are for professionals.
I cannot say the equations and solutions are correct or not.

Anyway, the logics over observed facts seems much valid.
The main parts are well organized to introduce and compare the new 5-D physics over 4-D Einstein relativity physics.

According to this and the author's other book, only two problems remain.
1. how the light from the original small universe with 8 million light year distance has come to us within only a day or so?
2. if quasars are poped up from vaccum(surely not 'nothing') as the universe expands, where's the anti-matters? the author suggests this as the problem of big-bang.

Anyhow, this is much less problems than big-bang to explain the universe.
This Cameli-Hartnett Cosmological Relativity Theory shall be the main physics theory in some day.

Warp, now I know why I feel jet-lagged!
By Amazon Customer
I especially like that Dr. Hartnett did not give up his biblical beliefs about origins just because those beliefs have fallen out of favor with some people. His book gives us insight into the philosophical bias of many interpreters of the data, and some wonderful new theories related to our time, purpose, and place in the universe. Though I don't claim to technically understand many elements of the physics involved, Dr. Hartnett makes most of the concepts he presents comprehensible to those interested in cosmology, especially those with science/math backgrounds. I hope his theories will be given the consideration they deserve.

Species Diversity in Space and Time, by Michael L. Rosenzweig

Species diversity is marked by some interesting facts--such as larger areas have more species, and diversity is particularly high near the equator. Other factors to consider are what reduces diversity in ecologically productive places and across what scales of space and time diversity patterns hold. This book examines these questions and many others, the author employing both theory and data in his search for answers. Surprisingly, many of the questions have reasonably likely answers. By identifying these, attention can be turned toward life's many still-unexplained diversity patterns. As evolutionary ecologists race to understand biodiversity before it is too late, this book will help set the agenda for diversity research into the next century and will be useful to graduate students and researchers in ecology and evolutionary and conservation biology.

Review
"This is a milestone, or perhaps more of a buoy on a turbulent sea, that defines...one man's position on his life's work." G. Stevens, Choice

"In what may be the most important book on this subject since MacArthur's Geographical Ecology, Rosenzweig combines theory with a huge body of empirical observations on terrestrial, aquatic, and marine organisms living today as well as in the geological past to produce a coherent account that brings together several previously separate research traditions ranging from experimental ecology to ecosystems analysis, paleontology, biogeography, and macroevolution...Rosenzweig confronts the complexity of diversity directly, convincing the reader that a predictive understanding can come about only when we study the phenomenon at all scales of space and time...More clearly than anyone else, Rosenzweig shows why we cannot employ small-scale patterns of diversity uncritically as models to explain larger scale patterns of diversity among biogeographical provinces over geological time." Geerat J. Vermeij, Science

"I recommend the book...It provides one of the clearest and best accounts of species-area relationships I have read, and it shows how scale matters if we are to understand these relationships...It will give us much to think about, and should generate some lively debates." John H. Lawton, Nature

"...a comprehensive synthesis and analysis of a whole range of biological inquiry, centred on patterns of species diversity, richness and abundance...By providing a detailed analysis and suggesting what we know and what we do not, Rosenzweig provides valuable input to a revised research agenda for diversity research." Stephen Woodley, Environments

"Species Diversity in Space and Time is both an indispensable review of work on patterns of species diversity and a template for organizing future work...He has shared his deep thoughts on complex topics, and the book will be of great value to those who pursue this fundamentally important subject." Peter S. White, American Scientist

"In a clear, almost conversational style, the author addresses a broad range of topics...Rosenzweig combines empirical data, simulation model results, and ecological theory to address topics such as the scale dependence of the slopes of species-area curves, the coevolution of habitat diversity with species diversity, and paleobiological patterns...The focus of this book is on ecological theory and it does not directly address management applications, but it should be accessible to a broad readership that includes natural area managers and nonscientists...The rare difficult sections may be skipped without loss of continuity, though, and the reader should be rewarded, as I was, with an enhanced multiscale perspective on species diversity." Don McKenzie, Natural Areas Journal

"...a sweeping and far ranging book...instructful and insightful...[Rosenzweig] is thorough in both his description of the pattern and in his discussion of factors...this book covers a tremendous breadth of material and thus gives a fine starting place to begin to answer the question, why are there this many species here?" M.H.H. Stevens, Plant Science Bulletin

Great explanations of species diversity
By E. Osier
My graduate advisor recommended this book and I'm getting a copy for myself. It is full of useful, clear-cut information about the complexities that create the diversity we see everywhere within the natural world. It is easy to read, almost conversational, with numerous examples from all areas of ecological research. There are many graphs to visually explain the patterns described and not too many difficult, complex formulas (only the necessary ones).

Seral and evolutionary consideration well interwoven
By Tom L. Forest
Some chapter titles: Patterns in Space; Patterns in Time; Dimensionless patterns (body size, food chain patterns); Speciation; Extinction; Species-Area Curves; Energy Flow and Diversity
I have used this work as a foundation for simulation modeling of biodiversity in seral and evolutionary time frames. It's intended as a textbook, though knowledgeable lay people will find its richness rewarding.

Best book to get your graduate career in Ecology jump started, heavy book, but very well written. Would definitely give to my students to read .

A great collection of stories
By Ian K.
I have only read Interzone a few times in the past. Perhaps this should change. This issue of Interzone is a collection of wonderful stories. I bought the issue for Alistair Reynolds' story A Murmuration. I also discovered a fantastic story by Fadzlishah Johanabas (Songbird). In addition to publishing established writers like Alistair Reynolds, Interzone seems to be keeping alive the tradition of publishing very promising up-and-coming writeres like Johanabas.
Now that Interzone is available as a Kindle publication it is both reasonably priced and accessible. If you enjoy science fiction stories, I think that you'll enjoy this issue of Interzone.

Another First-Class Collection of Stories
By Charcoal Chicken
A first-class collection of stories from this under-appreciated UK magazine. The stories are original, fresh, and - in some cases - beautifully written. I've had subscriptions to Asimov's and other of the very top US-magazines, and Interzone consistently throws up better batches of stories. To be blunt, some of the US magazines read quite stale in comparison. In this issue of Interzone the stories by Alastair Reynolds (A Murmuration) and Tendai Huchu (The Worshipful Company of Milliners) are exceptional.
