I'll be frank about this book -- it's a beast to read. There is so much great content, but half the book is written in bullet points which is painful to try to read. The way the information presented makes this book almost impossible to get through, but it is there and very useful.

good, but expensive for what it is

Good book for beginners, but it should be much cheaper. Exercises are old fashioned and repetitive (almost exclusively drills and dictations). The videos and audios presented on the website and the DVD are very cheaply done: you can find better (and more fun) audiovisual materials for free on Youtube. I learnt a lot with this book, but I shouldn't have paid $70 for it..

horrible editing ruined this book

Here's the good: the characters and story line, for the first couple of chapters, were intriguing and worth reading.

Here's the bad: the editing is AWFUL. I mean, terrible. Words missing in sentences. Using "this" instead of "that." Incorrect pronouns (like using "he" instead of "I"--very confusing!). Misplaced quotation marks. Incorrect use of "'s". Missing periods. Without even trying, I counted 11 mistakes in the first 2 chapters. After that, I couldn't deal with it any more and deleted the book.

If the book gets cleaned up, I suspect it could be worth 4 stars. Until then, it's unreadable.

This book would have been so much better

if not for the horrendous editing or lack thereof. I usually try to ignore the editing but this was so awful, not only was it a distraction, it made it really confusing to figure out what he was saying. At one point, half a chapter was repeated. I thought something was wrong with my Kindle. If the editing is ever cleaned up, the book deserves at least four stars but not in its current state.

Could use some editting

As other reviewers have said this books editing really needs some work. It has only a few typos that I can remembers off hand but there were quite a few missing words and the formatting was a mess in general.

Another reviewer mentioned that Caine talks about breasts a lot. This is fairly true. A good way to think of Caine is that he does not really have a filter, he does and says what he wants to for the most part. The vast majority of other characters in the book are women and seemingly all are attractive and all have something for the protag. If you are looking for deep and interesting characters you wont really get it here. The story is also fairly straightforward.

Sub par characters, bad editing and yet I still enjoyed the read. Caine is a fun guy to read. A lot of the comments about women get old after awhile as does his overall attitude but he has a brazen confidence or even cockiness that I enjoyed. I'm pretty sure ill pick up book 2 but don't hold me to that, the thoughts of how bad the editing could be in a new release kind of scares me to be honest.

This book Makes Sense.

I bought this book in lieu of purchasing a Nikon D600. I knew there would be a learning curve for the camera, and I wanted to get a head start on that curve by getting familiar with the book BEFORE I purchased the camera.
Once the camera arrived I set to work taking photos and learning. I found this book to be very helpful. The text just didn't tell how to do things, but made a point to explain why things do what they do. I have been an avid photographer for years (45 years), and my ego doesn't stand in my way of me buying any book for "Dummies" because I know these books make learning understandable. I could have toughed it out and not "asked for directions". But, why do that? The book is easy to use; the text is well written and clear, and I'm glad I bought this book!
Incidentally, I was reading some general information in line about reprogramming some buttons and functions. I must have read many articles and watched many YouTube videos on how to perform this "simple" task by photographers claiming to be professionals. Sometimes people may be really good at what they do but, they don't seem to be able to explain clearly how they do it. After reading and listening to this gobblledygook, I went strait to the D600 For Dummies Book, and discovered a whole section on this topic, and the explanations were very clear and precise. Great book!

No matter your experience level, it breaks it down in full color.

Loaded with glossy full-color photos on its pages and filled with more information that you could dream, this book breaks down the D600 for dummies or not. Those who are experienced in photography will still find things they didn't know it could do, and those new to photography will feel like they just had a college course with a great instructor to take them along the way. It takes you through all parts of the camera but also all parts of photography in an easily read book that allows you to skip through what you know and easily understand, through photos, what you need to learn. In all honesty, you need no experience to tackle mastering the camera completely as long as you have this and it's a thick book

My first "for Dummies" purchase and well-worth my time. Don't rely solely on that manufacturer's User Manual, as they generally lack the practical application usage of your camera. I specifically liked the format and simplified explanations.

About the Author

Ali Said Faqi, DVM, PhD, DABT, ATS, is a Senior Director of Developmental and Reproductive Toxicology, a Senior Principal Scientist at MPI Research and an Adjunct Associate Professor at Wayne State University, School of Medicine, Department of OBGYN in Detroit, MI. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Leipzig in Germany in 1995 and D.V.M. from Somali National University. Dr. Faqi earned a diploma of specialization in Experimental Pharmacology from the University of Milan in Italy.

He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Free University of Berlin-Germany from 1996 till 1998. He worked as a Research Associate at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia and at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Before joining MPI Research, Dr. Faqi was a Senior Scientist at Allergan Pharmaceuticals in Irvine, California and a Research Toxicologist at IIT Research Institute in Chicago, Illinois. He is a Diplomate of American Board of Toxicology (D.A.B.T.) and a Fellow of Academy of Toxicological Sciences (A.T.S.). Dr. Faqi is a member of the Editorial Board of Reproductive Toxicology Journal and ISRN Toxicology. He served as a Board of Scientific Counselors (BOSC) Computational Toxicology at the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) from September, 2009-September, 2010. He is also a member of Scientific Advisory Board of the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative (AAQI).

Dr. Ali Faqi is ad-hoc scientific reviewer for the scientific journals (Regulatory Pharmacology and Toxicology, Toxicology Journal, System Biology in Reproductive Medicine, Pesticide Biochemistry and Physiology, PLoS ONE and Birth Defects Research Part B: Developmental & Reproductive Toxicology). He is a Visiting Professor at the University of Palermo, Italy. In 2009, Dr. Faqi was a guest speaker at King Fahd Medical Research Center in King Abdiaziz University, Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) where he lectured on Preclinical Toxicology.

He is a past chairman of the membership committee of the Teratology Society and a past President of Michigan Society of Toxicology. Currently, he is the chairman of the Education Committee of the Teratology Society (2012-2013) and the Vice President of Toxicologists of African Origin (2012-2013). He has published over 100 technical and scientific papers and authored and co-authored 7 book chapters.
