With its provocative subtitle, freelance journalist Corbett's new book on Cuba certainly is not sponsored by the Cuban department of tourism. Nor is it a treatise from the Miami exile community. Rather, it is an honest, behind-the-scenes look at everyday Cubans dealing with life and survival. They are pawns in the great chess game between two looming ideologies: the capitalist United States, which never recognized the legitimacy of the Cuban Revolution, and the Socialist government under Castro, which is determined to continue the struggle. These ordinary folk spend an inordinate amount of time trying to make ends meet and stretch their meager resources (and ration books) from month to month. Where contrary political expression is dangerous, they resist in subtler ways: buying or selling goods on the black market, making illegal money off the tourist trade, or even getting tattoos. More daring Cubans take to the seas. Yet perhaps Fidel's stubbornness and belief in Cubanidad ("Cubaness") has paid off in an unintentional way. "They are now prepared to defend Cuba's destiny," concludes Corbett of Cubans. "And in the preparedness, perhaps Castro achieved the greatest victory of all." Cuba: Good and Bad

I visited Cuba in March 1997 and have always been drawn back to books that allow me to vicariously revisit the country.
Ben Corbett's book manages to walk a fine line between an admiration for Cuba (especially her people) and often stern criticism of the Castro regime. It differs, therefore, from many other books about Cuba. Corbett is no Miami based Cuban exile with a chip on his shoulder but nor is he a na�ve promoter of the Communist Party government. In short, Corbett has real credibility.
From another angle, Corbett is clearly no blow in visitor who, after a week or two in the country, regards himself as some sort of expert. Instead, Corbett has visited the country on a number of occasions and for considerable lengths of time in each case. He has immersed himself in the country from a variety of perspectives and has clearly travelled widely and met a host of individuals, many of whom he now counts as friends.
It seems to me that Corbett has a love for Cuba but a distinct distaste for the regime. Yet for all this, he has no axe to grind. Far too many critical Cuba commentators are allied with the exile communities in Florida. Unfortunately, for all the errors and flaws of the regime, its hasty end may well herald the return of the exiles and a still less than positive outcome. There may be no velvet revolution.
I recommend this book to all readers interested in Cuba and its future.

Simply amazing

I am a 32 years old cuban who left Cuba in 1999. I was born into the "revolution" and was able to witness most of the stories told on this book. However, this book goes deep into the real heart of Cuba discovering things that even me as a Cuban, I was unaware of. Great Job!!!!

Great book, easy,enjoyable to read. I had no knowledge of Cuban life.Was curious of what life is like over there. This book gives you an idea of the day to day in Cuba along with the political climate and background, all the while entertaining. Excellent read.

I gain a whole new RESPECT to everyone around the world with their traditions, culture, beliefs, etc.

A good book that explains the ties between music with cultures, mathematics, weaving, crafts, and other examples. Nicely diagrammed patterns and illustrated connections to instruments, performances, and people. Very good explanations of patterns and beats.

My one negative comment is that most links to the audio examples are out-of-date. Links point to vague sites. Emails to Bembo Music or the author are not answered very quickly. I hope replies here can remedy the situation and allow customers to hear what is explained in the text.

Great book, a deep study of clave.

Fantastic book which gives a detailed insight into all aspects of Cuban clave. It is unusual in that it presents an almost mathematical, geometrica perpective on clave and its African sources. It is presented in a beautiful, large, paperback volume that seems designed as a teaching text, perfect for students or teachers. One thing to note. There are no cds with the volume and one must purchase extra mp3s from Amazon if one wants to hear the musical examples.

Not the Trojan War, not the Dorian Invasion, not even the recent Persian invasions – which had devastated mainland Greece and seen Athens herself evacuated and put to the flame, the buildings on her Acropolis razed into dust – could compare to the scale of the devastation that engulfed all of Greece for almost three decades, causing the deaths of tens, perhaps hundreds of thousands.

Entire populations were displaced, whole cities destroyed, and mountainous sums of money spent, all in order for Greece’s two most famous city-states to establish who had dominion over Greece. Sparta, whose invincible armies had recently led the Greeks to victory against Xerxes’s hordes at Plataea was at the head of the Peloponnesian League. Their opponents were led by proud Athens, possessor of a fleet that virtually dominated the entire Mediterranean and decimated the Persian navy at Salamis and Mycale, at the head of the Delian League. Sparta was insular and old-fashioned, while Athens was dynamic and democratic, but both were bent on imperialistic expansion, and the two ancient rivals, at loggerheads for so long, eventually sucked every other major city-state in Greece into the war.

The Peloponnesian War would rage on a scale that was unimaginable to the Greeks, ranging from Italy to Asia Minor. By war’s end, nothing would be the same and nothing would be sacred. Even the Spartans, the proud vanquishers of the Persian hordes, whose king Leonidas and his Three Hundred had died to the last man at Thermopylae to help preserve Greek freedom, were forced to go cap in hand to the Persian emperors and beg for money to continue the war. The war between Athens and Sparta was a war of nations, and it lasted so long that many who were alive and well at its beginning were dead of disease and old age – quite apart from the hazards of the battlefield – by its finish.

I liked The personal accounts of some of the players in the story. Woven into the story of the Peloponnesian conflict was documented quite well with an orderly progression and analysis of motivations of the players involved.

Very interesting summary of the Peloponnesian War. It's incredible how this magnificent civilization destroyed itself little by little. Should be a lesson for all human kind to learn.
