English novelist, historian and science writer Herbert George Wells (1866–1946) abandoned teaching and launched his literary career with a series of highly successful science-fiction novels. The Time Machine was the first of a number of these imaginative literary inventions. After narrowly escaping from the Morlocks, the Time Traveller undertakes another journey even further into the future where he finds the earth growing bitterly cold as the heat and energy of the sun wane. Horrified, he returns to the present, but soon departs again on his final journey.
While the novel is underpinned with both Darwinian and Marxist theory and offers fascinating food for thought about the world of the future, it also succeeds as an exciting blend of adventure and pseudo-scientific romance. This abridged version will work well as an introduction to classic literature in elementary grade classes, but omits too much of the original text for older students. First novel by H.G. Wells, published in book form in 1895. The novel is considered one of the earliest works of science fiction and the progenitor of the "time travel" subgenre. Wells advanced his social and political ideas in this narrative of a nameless Time Traveller who is hurtled into the year 802,701 by his elaborate ivory, crystal, and brass contraption. The world he finds is peopled by two races: the decadent Eloi, fluttery and useless, are dependent for food, clothing, and shelter on the simian subterranean Morlocks, who prey on them. The two races--whose names are borrowed from the Biblical Eli and Moloch--symbolize Wells's vision of the eventual result of unchecked capitalism: a neurasthenic upper class that would eventually be devoured by a proletariat driven to the depths. --The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

This 1960 NYRB edition is wonderful (took me back to childhood browsing in the Bookmobile)

I am one who always recommends reading the book before viewing the film, but confess I had NOT READ War of the Worlds (sci-fi mostly "left me cold") before having seen TWO film versions of it. It was a newspaper review on the soon-to-be-released "Alien: Covenant" that referred to the great influence Wells' novel had overall on this genre that led to my coming here, and after reading the Sample pages (as well as some of the reviews) knew I wanted to correct my omission! Now with book in hand I am SO pleased, and can't wait to dive in...! May physical volumes NEVER go away as "outmoded!"

Excellent version of an amazing book

This is one of my favorite books, and I am so glad to have such a good audiobook version of it! It's amazing how much can be packed into such a short book. This book redefined an entire genre. Everyone knows that, though. The real review is about this audiobook version, which is very solid. I enjoyed the narration immensely. The narrator did a great job of being this story to life, and I got lost in it. I was sad when this book was over.

Acceptable but perfunctory bundle of 25 Wells' novels

REVISED 06/29/16: This older Halcyon collection is a good value for a mere $.99, especially since Halcyon recently offered this very same package for twice the price. Yes, these novels can all be had as public domain freebies, but to have 25 of them so conveniently bundled for such a low price is worth considering. Since this was published, however, other more complete $.99 sets have become available, making this no longer the slam-dunk deal it once was.
Wells wrote various types of books including particularly great, pioneering science-fiction novels; those wonderful SF novels are included in this set (which is primarily why I bought it). He also wrote social and political novels, romances, and light-hearted satires, also included.
This Halcyon set has an active TOC and contains 25 of some 31 of Wells' novels currently in the U.S. public domain. The 6 NOT provided are: "The Sea Lady" and "Marriage" (these 2 being easily obtainable as public domain freebies in the Kindle Store), "Joan and Peter," "Undying Fire," "Bealby," and "The Prophetic Trilogy." In addition to their absence, my other criticism is that "The Time Machine" (the well-known title story no less!) SHOULD contain italicized words which are NOT so indicated (in any manner) in this edition. Some other novels in this set do show emphasis by ALL CAPS and some others use before-and-after lines ( __like this__), but more than a few others also seem to be altogether lacking any such indication.
While the omission of certain stories and italics was not a deal-breaker to me when I first purchased it for $.99, there are now better sets available for the same price. In fact, the edition I would currently recommend is a nicely-formatted, virtually-complete, $.99 set titled H.G. WELLS: COLLECTED NOVELS, SHORT STORIES, ESSAYS, AND ARTICLES from e-artnow, which I purchased to replace this as my "keeper copy."
ADDENDUM: At $1.99, this is no longer a set I would consider.
