The best model to understand differentiated products

It is sad that this book and its models have been largely erased from microeconomic textbooks for a long time. I guess economists do not like the approach since it cannot be as cleanly modelled as the standard oligopoly models. However, if you're interested in industrial organisation and how economic models can be used to describe real business situation, this book is very interesting. You have to find the book second hand, so make sure you get the 8th edition, because the author has added lengthy appendices in the later editions.

A dated classic

Following Friedman's victory over Samuelson in the debate over epistemology in economics and the establishment of positivism within academic economics, the concept of monopolistic competition slowly died. Still this is a great classic. I still have my heavily underlined 8th edition which I read back in 1967 [in the spring months before the summer of love.] It presents microeconomics in the pre-mathematical manner of Marshall and still has a lot of value.
